I'm not asking for a 100% tutorial, absolutely not lol!

I just wanted to let you know where I am and where I am going.

I have a freshly installed W7, updated, directx, autologin, and whatnot.

Games I would like to play using gameex are MAME 0.51, NES, SNES, Sega Genesis/Megadrive and that is just about it.

I have purchased the GameEx license key (missed the summer sale damn it).

Currently EmuMovies downloader are getting box, snap and titles for the abovementioned. Would you recommend getting any of the other categories (banners, etc)? I'm short of internet speed here and this machine will not incorporate in a arcade machine, it will just keep me from getting up from bed earlier than needed.

So, ROMS are sorted in one folder, artwork in another.

And then there's XBMC. Here's my biggest question. In which way am I supposed to all this. Should I begin with XBMC and have that sorted out with themes and movie libraries, and the move on with GameEx?

By the way, where and when will I find the GameEx addon for xbmc? Is this automatically installed when gameex sees xbmc is lurking around the system?

THANX

Do you have 0.151 Extras for MAME? If so, open it up and look at the contents, from a "folder" perspective, then in GameEx you will see in the MAME settings the default paths for these, which are no doubt incorrect for you as they were for me. I tried to stay right inline with the suggested directory structure withn setup to keep this clean and simple. I would suggest this method, but regardless, just point those to the correct folder paths, and you'll be off and running with all the bells and whistles the EXTRAS set has to offer.

I'm no help on XBMC, but there are several XBMC guru's here that can answer that one.

About 28775 zips (some 7z), this means there are no extras there right? All in all around 45 gb.

Are these needed? / what are they for?

I'm just gonna skip support for mame if this mame-extras is mandatory :(

EDIT: Or do you mean the option EXTRAS in the emumovies-downloadtool? In this case, do you recommend them for the wholesome experience? ;)

The extras set is I beleive 11-15 GB, I don't recall right off, and is available here on the FTP site. See the news section for Tom's annoucement.

The extras contain pictures of the cabs, marquees, in game screen shots, etc., and really add to the overall feel of GameEx. I would consider it a must after being exposed to it, but you can get by without it.

Look at the MAME settings screen here

It doesn't really matter where you put the files, but like I said, I used the suggested directory structure.

Just click and browse to your folder location. You will also see in here numerous default paths to the Extras, if you download those, edit the paths to point to your directory locatioins.

You can shortcut to all of this config inside GameEx by selecting the "Advanced Config" once you are in config mode.

These links break it all down for you.

No it is not, but I purchased it before it started meaning I have to pay for the next revolutionary product :)

I don't know what the cutoff date for that is, or if there is one, but pre summer sale purchase doesn't automatically mean you don't get the free upgrade. It has been advertised as a upgrade to anyone registering the current version since the first of the year.

Oh well wow that was nice news, I have heard the next revolution will be nice :)

If anyone here knows whether I should setup gameex or xbmc first, I would like really to hear about this! :)

Pick one and run with it. It doesn't matter which you choose as they are independent of one another really.

Agreed. I personally have been running both for a number of years, and it really doesn't matter which you focus on first. Just make it a habit of getting one working right, before you try to integrate the other. The GameEx XBMC plugin just puts a menu entry in the "Programs" section of XBMC, that when clicked quits XBMC and launches GameEx. If you know XBMC at all then you realise you can do this manually later (and with more control) anyway. The XBMC plugin is more for convenience i think than anything else. Also, if you're going this route you'd still need to do the opposite - make GE quit and launch XBMC. Both are relatively easy to accomplish if you familiarise yourself with command lines, which you should absolutely be doing if you want the most out of GE ;)

Above all else though, we are a friendly bunch, and so if you need any advice just holla and we'll set you right :)
