  1. I have been playing R-Type constantly in the last 2 weeks and ever so slowly I'm getting better. My last run got me as far as level 7 with a new score of 308,800. A quick thought on stage 6: While in terms of level design R-Type is being hailed mainly for level 3 with its iconic battle against the giant mothership, I find stage 6 is where this game shines brightest. This level is different from almost everything I've seen in shmups so far, almost no bullets or enemies, only the maze with the big, nearly-indestructable ships which you have to dodge. A maze game within a shmup! Truly great stuff.
  2. After a long absence from R-Type I decided to come back and try and bump my score. I spent the better part of the weekend to familiarize myself with stages 3 to 5 and achieved a new score of 264,400. R-Type really rewards knowledge of the stages and enemy patterns!
  3. I had another good run - 181,060 (loop 3 stage R) As I was suspecting loop 3 is the same as loop 2 in terms of terrain and obstacles and the general way in which enemies appear. However, it seemed that the enemy flotillas consist of more saucers which certainly drop more bombs (aaargh!).
  4. Managed to get into level 3 for the first time last night. Judging from what little I saw of level 3 I reckon the champion stage loops indefinitely. Can anyone confirm this? That would mean once you developed strategies for every section of the champion stage your scores would rise rapidly, wouldn't it? 134,710
  5. I was trying to boost my DK score last night, but ended up frustrated cause I couldn’t score worth a damn, was dying stupid deaths galore and overall seemed to completely have forgotten how to play that game. I then decided to play MP for just one run, for practice, to not get too rusty. But boy, this single run really went well. I didn’t lose a single life until stage F in the champions course and even had 3 lives left after that pesky minefield at M. You really get a lot of points after like halfway through the course, with the time cap at 120 seconds and getting 800 to 1000 bonus points for shooting down each saucer flotilla. Anyway, I really dig this one! Happy Easter to all of the community! 119,040
  6. Finally made it past stage J in the champions course... only to discover not one but two new minefields 96,310
  7. 1st! (although most likely not for very long ) 80,360
  8. Getting accustomed to this one... you can actually dodge almost all of those bombs by going slower or faster... I like this game! 73,650
  9. Probably too special, but I'd really love to play Gradius or Gradius II. Oh, and Raiden II. And Wonder Boy
  10. ... sneaking up on 4th spot 165,100
  11. I never played this in the old days, but this game sure does make quite a lot of things right... I especially like the tune [dum-dum-DUM-du-dum] 49,680
  12. For reasons already stated, I'd be perfectly fine with the mods accepting MO's score.
  13. Major improvement - 159,600! (level 6-4) At this point I'm able to - steer my way through the barrel stages fairly consistently but still can't always cope with multi-barrel situtions when steering fails (let alone escape wild barrels) - wait patiently for a free pass in the conveyor stages and avoid dumb mistakes with the pies - make my way through the elevator stages more often than not by choosing a pixel-perfect starting point for the final run; I still haven't found out how to do the "retreat on second long spring" stunt though - show some patience when the rivet stages don't work out as expected This game's really got me! On this run I lost 2 lives for not being able to retreat in (elevator) stages 5-4 and 6-4 so that's what I'm trying to figure out next. Oh, and a top 3 spot would be nice
  14. Minor improvement - no spot up on the leaderboard though. Still haven't mastered the 3rd+ elevator stages yet - I understand the "retreat on second long spring" technique but boy are they fast.... 117,400
  15. I've been playing DK a lot lately - managed to get to level 6 with a score of 112,400. Also, I found this guide which helped me a lot understanding that game. Especially the "barrel steering technique" (also mentioned by Cynicaster earlier in the thread) goes a long way in reducing the randomness in the barrel stages. There's really more than meets the eye in that game!
  16. Finally updated the cab with the IGBY games this weekend... here are the first scores: Battle Garegga - 1,026,660 Intrepid - 34,510 (I like this one) Son Son - 64,020 Turbo Out Run - 6,075,190
  17. I'm using both the hi score snapper and CPW. Here are my CPW settings. Let us know if these work for you.
  18. Yeah, I did it score - 15,728,920 I realized that safe driving is the key to success - as strange as that may sound. So I cruised stages 4 and 5 true grandpa style and thus managed to complete the entire run with not a single accident! I really like this game!
  19. Happy Birthday GC! Thank you for making the GameEx Hi Score Comp something special!
  20. Aaaargh... SO CLOSE to stage 5. Almost got there. Will definitely try harder! score - 7,747,640
  21. A minor improvement - 7,331,940 I had just passed the roadsign at the end of stage 4 - guess that makes me 10-12 secs short of reaching stage 5. Anyway, lots of fun, this one!
  22. I find this one rather generic - but that's probably only because I haven't played it much. Let's see if it opens up a little if I play any longer. score - 269,500
  23. I can remember seeing this one for the first time when I was a kid - absolutely jaw dropping! I mean, it went up and down!! Never played it much though as in Germany minors were banned from arcades back in the days... and so I gave it a try for the comp and I find it surprisingly playable, even with my digital joysticks. Add the music and boom! another 3 hours gone Nice! score - 7,221,230
  24. Nice one Ex! What I like about DK is how you actually do find ways to cope with its randomness once you spend a little time with it. So, this week I'm out on vacation but I'll surely give it another try next week.
  25. I tried long and I tried hard - in fact played not much of a game except DK during the holidays. So I was stuck with scores somewhere in the 30k region when all of a sudden things went well for me and I got a whopping 76,500! I can only imagine the insane skills of the top players here! So, next up - dreaded third elevator stage
