Oops edited my last post rather than adding another bottom line of the deleted post is I tried setting pc/gameex/juke to 800x600 and nothing changed.
-
Run set up again, select advanced and it comes up under the keyboard input heading.
-
Yep, only thing I cut off was the first line ;created by Aldo's zinc front end Couldn't get my head around the command line and I read that you could take the zincfe2.exe out of Aldo's front end and use that to set zinc up. Once I had it working via the FE it also worked fine when gameex was windowed.
-
Yep, c:/Zinc which along with linking to the zinc.exe (and not either of the fes) are the other advanced mame settings.
-
The pathway is the default --renderer=.\renderer.znc renderer.znc is definitely the file the zincfe2.exe uses sorry havent used the command lines. not sure what you mean by the zinc options? This is the info in the zinc and renderer cfg files: --roms-directory=c:\mameui32\roms --use-sound=yes --sound-filter-enable=no --sound-filter-cutoff=22050 --sound-surround-lite-enable=no --sound-stereo-exciter=no --use-slow-geometry=no FullScreen = 1 ColorDepth = 32 Blending = 0 Dithering = 0 ShowFPS = 0 FrameLimitation = 1 FrameSkipping = 0 FramerateDetection = 1 Filtering = 0 TextureCaching = 2 TextureType = 3 TurnDisplay = 0 The zinc set up options in mame would have to be right or it wouldn't work when gameex is windowed?
-
The Zinc set up options within the advanced mame settings tab (use zinc/path/exe/zinc options) and then also tried it as a seperate emulator, both ways I get a black screen with sound when gameex is full screen (loads fine if gameex is windowed) If it loads when gameex is windowed it couldn't be the renderer path right?

Any chance someone can attach a hotkey to gameex on their set up and try use it to switch between two programs (or let me know if they already use them)? Like I said above the hotkey works fine for the jukebox software, and if I set one for GameEx it will open it but it won't bring it forward if it's already open and there's another program in front of it. Just want to be sure that it's the way gameex responds to a hotkey and not my set up causing the problem.

I'll update this just in case it's useful to someone else. I did find a way to get the zinc games showing, setting it up as a seperate emulator didnt change anything. It is the hide OS that's causing the problem, I couldn't see a setting to disable it (seems to be seperate to hide desktop?) so I've just taken it out of the gameex file. The games are now playing and so far nothing seems to be crashing. I'm assuming there's still something I'm missing in how it's set up if other people have had zinc running ok but i've spent way too much time on games I probably wont play and at least they're working now

Ok this should be my last dumb question for awhile promise I'm still trying to get gameex and my jukebox software working on the cabinet and be able to switch back and forth between them easily. As far as i can see I have to run the jukebox completely outside of gameex because I don't want to close it to return to games. I like being able to have it run constantly either with selected songs or random and people can just switch over to gameex when they want to play a game. This isn't a problem and I've set up a hotkey that lets me switch back to it ok. But when I try to add a hotkey to gameex it only opens it if its not running it wont bring it to the front if its in the background. So if I have gameex open I can hit the juke hotkey and it switches to that no problems, if I have the jukebox open and gameex in the background hitting the gameex hotkey wont bring it forward? Should this be working or is there another way to do what I want with moving between the two programs?

Just to add a little more info, the renderer.cfg has fullscreen set to 1 and I've disabled the hide desktop option and still getting the black screen if gameex is fullscreen. If it's the gameex hide os that's causing problems is there anyway around it? couldnt see anything in the settings section.
-
Sorry I thought I had the black screen problem sorted but turns out I don't . If gameex is full screen I get the black screen with sound. If gameex is windowed, zinc displays fine and is full screen. I've set zinc to full screen using the zincfe2.exe and it always plays full screen when using it seperately or when gameex is windowed. What am I missing to get zinc to display with gameex full screen?

Thanks bkenobi, when you say put the zinc roms back in their own folder do you mean within the mame rom folder? The settings says the roms have to be in the mame rom folder to be detected, so if there are the .137 roms plus a folder with the zinc roms I didn't think zinc would detect the right ones? I did at least think to keep a seperate copy of the zinc roms in case I wanted to update the mame rom set. For future reference if i update gameex will it keep my changes to the advanced mame settings (like do not filter) or will I have to re-enter the roms each time.

I've been trying to get Zinc running via the gameex advanced mame options and finally got it working except I'm now missing some games that were previously listed. What I've done: I started with Delusional's tutorial but didnt get it working. I use mameui32 .137 so I got a complete set of zinc roms and put them in the mame rom folder, overwriting the existing roms (something I'm thinking i may be one post away from regretting ) I got zinc to work fine with the zenith fe then used zincefe2.exe from aldo's FE and got zinc sorted, after figuring out the black screen but sound working problem it now seems to be working via gameex. Only problem is after updating the games list I'm now missing some of the games that were listed before like Tekken 1 and 2. I'm assuming mame isn't detecting them because I now have the wrong rom in my folder for .137 but if the roms need to be there for zinc to find them what should I have done or is it maybe another problem?

Sorry this is only a newbie suggestion but have there been any changes in the default filter options that rbarr110 might have caught in the update? In another thread it got brought up that the default gauntlet is actually the spanish version, with spanish likely to make the filter line in another update. Might be worth checking the news section to see if any of the update info relates to additions to the filter line? Edit: Actually scratch that as even if it did it should default to another version right? Sorry like they said probably still a filter\ options thing I know I had to play around to get a few games like wonderboy 2 working.
-
you can also either add spanish to the filter or the rom to the exclude rom option to cut it back to one gauntlet Someone else will hopefully chime in with if it can be seen from gameex but another option is using cpwizard, the program is handy for displaying the game controls and commands/ special movies so really great if you like the fighting games but it can also display all the other mame details including the rom. The other thing your post has brought up for me is that having a 2 player cabinet I need to go back and edit the games like gauntlet, TMNT etc that have the 4 player option as default. I dont know if 4 player can be added to the filter but I'm thinking it would also take out games that work ok and dont have 2 player versions? So I'm going to use romlister to make a list of 4 player games, then add them to the ignore rom/exclude rom options as needed.
-
What do you know it is the spanish version hadn't got around to playing that one yet. The ignore rom option is a great feature you'll probably also find that Wonderboy in Monsterland is missing. I think it's beacause the english versions are actually bootlegs and the default filter includes ignore japanese and bootleg games. Anyway I added the wonderboy rom (wbmlb) to the ignore list and problem solved, well after I remembered to update the list again.

Sorry I didn't really realise what the hito text related to, it's the option in the advanced mame settings to add the high scores to the info page? I've only just noticed that if I disable that the errors stop and so it doesn't affect mames ability to actually save the hi scores is that right?

Feature & Enhancement Requests
Noddy replied to Tom Speirs's topic in FAQs, Guides, & Other Useful Information
Not sure how practical this is but I'll add my 2 cents anyway. I've used the screensaver with a different frontend previously and one thing I really liked was being able to use all the artwork, my monitor is too small to use it for gameplay apart from cropped with vertical games, but there's some great artwork (and plenty of shockingly bad stuff) that it's a shame never gets seen. So personally I'd love to be able to have the screensaver show the game information without the mame bezel and run it off a different mame.exe (or do it within gameex if that's possible) so that I could set it to show all the artwork uncropped. -
Turns out it was the Hi folder causing the problem, I switched it over for a clean one and then set a new hi score to put a Galaga file back in and so far it seems to be working fine. Know very little on the software side but just incase it's relevant it was having hi files from different versions that triggered it, ie galagao and galaga. I love how GameEx automatically cut it down to one version of each game so hopefully starting with a clean folder and sticking with gameex should avoid the problem? Edit: I'm sure the problem disappeared when I took out the other galaga file when I tested it before but the error messages are starting to appear again as I start going through the games again including galaga.

Thanks for the reply, as it is it doesn't really work for me as the cabinet tends to sit in the background, people will add a few songs to the list during the night but it still spends a lot of time on random. I'll keep an eye out on the updates list and will certainly switch back if it gets included, otherwise it's great as is staying within GameEx as I'm really trying to get the cabinet as user friendly as possible.
-
Thanks, there's only the one appplication in the folder that I can see but when I tried moving a few roms to a clean copy of mame with hiscore/no nag it seems to be working. Sorry should have tried that first but just tried putting new mame.exes in the main folder. I'll try copying the folders across and hopefully leave behind what it doesnt like.

I'm using a mameui32 version with hi score support and no nag screens but when I run it through Gameex at least some of the games trigger the window "HiTo text has encountered a problem and needs to close" the game seems to load ok if I click on it again but its another thing where I can sort it out but its a pain for the casual user. The mame works fine when used directly and HiTo seems to be gameex related? So I was wondering if there is anything I can do to try fix this (I've tried different versions with Hiscore and no nag but get the same results) or if Gameex just doesn't like me using a non standard version of mame? I've another question that's more general and I dont want to spam the forum so I'll just tack it on here and if anyone can suggest anything for either that'd be great . My cabinet basically just runs Mame and a jukebox software and I'm trying to figure out whats the easiest way to switch between them (the cabinet only has arcade controls/ipac). Currently I use a shift button to use the hotkey Alt+Tab but that's still a three button combination, again its something thats fine for me but not really user friendly. Am I missing an easier option for switching between GameEx and another application like Jukebox? Thanks

Hi Loving Gameex for the mame cabinet but I couldn't find an answer to this in the FAQ, previous posts or the gameex settings. I'm using the Gameex jukebox with itunes. It shows and plays all the songs fine and if there is no songs selected when it starts it plays random songs. But if I select songs, these then become the playlist and once they play through it just goes back and keeps playing the same playlist. Is it possible to que the songs up and then have them deleted afterwards so that once all selected songs have been played it then returns to playing random songs? I know it's possible to clear the playlist but it just seems strange that there's not an option to have it play selected songs once and then return to random songs? Thanks
