  1. A nice way to compress PSX images but have no slowdown in loading is to use PSX Emulator (http://psxemulator.gazaxian.com/) which has a specialized compression built in -- images can be converted from the gui or the included commandline utility (I wrote a short batch file to do my whole set at once). Personally, I think PSX Emulator is superior to ePSXe -- it emulates the PSX exactly as it was rather than changing the graphics around. It can also load images directly from the command line, so set up in GameEx is quick and simple. The built in compression works very well -- 50% or more on many games. A nice side effect is that if the image is broken it won't compress -- so it helps to get bad images out of your set. Before compressing, I highly recommend to run your images through PSX Renamer -- video snaps from Emumovies will work better, and so will the GameEx database (although the PSX one is still under construction).

  3. I've been working on that for the last few days actually. I assume, from your description, that you're talking about the GameBase Spectrum set. I found a nifty program called Sort Pics -- www.sortpics.com. It is shareware -- but the trial version is fully functional with no expiry, just a little nag screen. The great thing about Sort Pics is you can make categories and assign keys to them. So, I took the GameBase Atari 8-bit set of pics and created the categories Boxes, Snaps, and Titles and assigned the keys B, S, and T to them respectively. After doing that it's relatively quick work to sort and separate the messy conbloberation of the GamesBase pics. Then I used a renaming program to strip the underscores from all the files -- from playing around it seems fatmatch doesn't like them. Then I ran the boxes, snaps and titles through fatmatch -- I lowered the matching percentage from the default for this, since the GamesBase names are quite messy. After Fatmatch has matched, you really need to check the matches before allowing Fatmatch to do the actual renaming, as there's a lot more room for error than usual. It works well overall. I have done the Atari 8-bit and Atari ST this way. I'm going to try out Tempest's new ScreenShot Magician to fill the holes in these to make completish sets. I plan to post the finished sets here for others to use. If you try this on the Spectrum, do please share the results. Perhaps if a small handful of people joined in we could make usualable artwork sets for most of the old computers from the GameBase sets without too much effort -- there's sets for the CPC, Apple, C64, etc. I'll try to get my first two sets up later tonight.
  4. The Mame emu map file already does that. If you do a seach I posted a ready to go one to include the other emulators that can emulate arcade games which mame can't. The mame emu map is very versatile and can easily be set up to, for example, switch out all neo-geo games to WinKawaks or the like.

  8. There's an easier way. With Romlister you can create a batch file to move the selected files to another folder. Just run the batch file after Romlister makes it an presto. Romlister will let you specify the destination directory.
  9. What kind of merge are we talking about here? If it's the older goodmerge then the solution is simple -- run your snaps and other extras through Fatmatch. Then your extras and snaps will match the merged 7z files, and it'll always show the video first. After doing that you can also, if you like, add a set of Goodtools still snaps to the same folder and for the individual games in the 7z it'll show the appropriate pic of the hack, Japanese version, whatever, while still showing the appropriate video in the main list or on the greyed out "Play this Game" on the info page. I rather like it that way. If it's the newer merge feature and not goodmerge then you still need to run your snaps/extras through fatmatch -- which will cause the videos to be duplicate for the different variants of the roms. It will show the videos first this way as well. Fuzzy matching basic only works for unmerged sets, if you're merging you need make sure your extras are matching exactly.
  10. Yes, there is a working Mame ROM for Gauntlet Legends. We can't give links to commercial roms on the forum, and generally you're not supposed to ask. However, what you can do is check the ROM you have using Clrmamepro. It will verify if you have the correct version of the Rom for your version of Mame (they change regularly). Also, Gauntlet Legends is DEMANDING. You'll need a very high end PC and your OS must be 64-bit (and 64-bit Mame) to make Gauntlet Legends playable -- and even then it'll be fairly jerky. I'd recommend playing the PSX, Dreamcast or N64 versions instead until PC technology catches up with Mame.
  11. I'd really like to see such an App, Tempest. I find the GameEx create snaps feature to be somewhat problematic -- it typically barfs on resolutions below 640 x 480, and has colour issues with many emulators even at 640 x 480. An App like you described would be lovely.
  12. FRAPS will allow you to take snaps of any program -- and there's a plugin for GameEx that will neatly rename the snaps to match the current roms. Searching for FRAPS on the forum here should bring it up.
  13. The databases are far from finished -- particularly the PSX, which I only started recently. Nothing to do but wait. If you want your images to match the names in the database, you needn't do it manually. The program PSX Renamer will do it for you automatically.
  14. I get the same behaviour every now and then. At this point I just keep the wallpaper black, as I've given up on restoring the wallpaper each time it happens.

    Bugs found...

    I'm quite confident this is a bug. I mentioned it many months ago, but the post slipped through the cracks, I guess. GameEx will crash and burn on files with Japanese characters in them. If I put a video with Japanese characters in it into any of my video directories GameEx will crash when I try to go into that particular folder (either with the regular Video option or the Media Library). Same holds for MP3s. If I remove any files with Japanese characters (or rename them) everything will work fine. I've tried 4 different computers with this -- it's repeatable on all. I haven't tested, but I'm willing to wager that the same holds true for Roms with Japanese characters in the filename. Of course I could get everything to work by just renaming all my files, but I'd really rather not -- most of my music is Japanese from my own CDs that I ripped myself which media player automatically labelled with the correct Japanese names. And besides -- there's a Japanese translation of GameEx -- which is pretty much worthless, if GameEx crashes on Japanese filenames. I can send some sample Japanese files if you want to try to recreate the problem. Also, a minor bug in the Movies Database. If I click cancel after doing a search, it will populate the fields with the results from the search -- basically the opposite of cancelling. Also, a minor thing but somewhat annoying. GameEx pulled up an incorrect cover for one of my Doctor Who vids -- I deleted the cover in the GameEx folder, and set the vid to nothing in the Movies Database. After doing that, I pulled up GameEx and it redownloaded the same incorrect cover on its own. I deleted it again, but still GameEx stubbornly redownloads the thing every time. 2
  16. I hope you do expand Valhalla. It would be awesome to see it updated to work as a V4 theme -- using overlays. The galaxy moved to a background and the other graphics made into an overlay to go overtop (and even overlap the snaps and whatnot a bit). Would look super awesome.

  18. The easy 8-way is only nice for fighters (in my opinion) -- makes for a smooth easy diagonal jump. For normal 8-way games -- like say Raiden -- just normal 8-way is better. I need to refine that list, as a lot of those fighters are 2.5D which would be better to use normal 8-way. I do think a genre option would be useful. Especially if it uses the databases -- then 8-way easy could be used for fighters for consoles for example.
  19. The default covers nearly everything. Just a handful of games that are mislabelled in the DAT files that aren't covered.

  22. Finally finished cleaning up the game names. More than 5000 games were consolidated, so matching should improve dramatically. Everything is ready now to start making the series lists.

  25. Might I make a suggestion? Perhaps we can start a new thread which can be pinned to list the extra settings for various games not automatically covered by the default ini file? I'm quite pleased to find out about this file. Today I plan to run Romlister and make a list of all 8-way fighter games and set them all to 8-way easy diagonal (as that's what that map is for really). It's a whole world of possibilities opened up. From what I've read in the ini file it looks like even individual roms for emulators other than Mame can be specifically targetted. Most home versions of Q*bert require the joystick to be rotated (like the Atari 2600 and Atari 8-bit versions). Seems like this can be done. Any chance of perhaps making this plugin work in conjunction with the GameEx databases? Then the genre could be read from the databases and console fighter games could be automatically switched to 8-way easy diagonals.
