Im not able to test a pin2dmd but basically you need xdmd.dll xdmdnative.dll and the dmddevice.dll and usb driver from the latest PinMAME installation. You should also use the correct architecture, 32 or 64 bit. You need 32 bit for your current PinballX install.
Assuming you have a DMD, first of all you need to have launched a game that supports high scores, Then ensure you have a long enough timer between games to show the high score.
I can see a couple of reasons of why it wouldn't capture the backglass.
1. Because you don't have the games backglass set to hidden.
2. Because PinballX is trying to capture a DirectX window and its just grabbing a black image. In which case it wont save it.
Several nice new features in this release.
- Can now zero rate tables.
- Attract mode now shows high scores on your DMD
- Select and filter the game list by ratings.
Enjoy!

Unless your pin2dmd is using really old firmware it shouldn't work out of the box with PinballX and will need the custom XDMD dlls and the correct dmddevice.dll. Did you set it up yourself?
Im only trying to figure out whats going on here.
