egadgetboy Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 Hate to say it, but can't get into "Configuration" now after updating to 11.83 - everything was working fine before, but now the screen goes blank. Ideas?
egadgetboy Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 In case anyone needs this: I was running the prior version to 11.82 (download and installed GameEx late last week), and am running Windows XP SP3.

Ideas?I am unable to duplicate this issue on 2 test machines. I would try an offline install perhaps to fix any corruption that may have occurred during upgrading. If not then please post your log.
egadgetboy Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I'm not at home right now, but I downloaded 11.83 and tried earlier to reinstall over the existing installation but received a Permission error or something. If I wanted to, what config files can I save and then completely uninstall/reinstall? Or would I be better with this issue to just set up my config from scratch after I reinstall; just in case my configs have become corrupt or something?

Yeah there was an issue with 11.83 but I uploaded a fixed copy about 15 mins after release with the same version number. Just go ahead and download and install again..If you get a permission error during install its most likely that a file or app is left open and setup cannot overwrite the file. Just reboot and try again.
egadgetboy Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 It's actually "Access is denied" when trying to run the install exe. I rebooted, but still getting the error... even after downloading 11.83 again today.Sorry I didnt reply sooner. egadgetboy Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Even tried disabling anti-virus, ran ccleaner, and rebooted again. Still no luck. Access is denied.
Draco1962 Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Sounds like it isn't a matter of file or app open. Try right-clicking on the install.exe, if you see Run as Administrator, left-click that and try again. You may also want to zip and upload your gameex.ini file.
egadgetboy Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 I was finally able to reinstall without getting "Access is denied" by deleting every reference to GameEx in the Registry, rebooting into Safe Mode and then running the install exe from there. Only installing in Safe Mode resolved the issue. Attempting reinstall after cleaning the Registry, but before booting into Safe Mode, failed...
egadgetboy Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 And now, after all that, I am back to the original problem again: screen goes blank when I go into Configuration. Fresh install. No adjustments made, other than to apply my registration key to the Registry.
Draco1962 Posted June 26, 2011 Posted June 26, 2011 Since Safe Mode assumes Admin rights are enforce, I still feel that you may run into problems in the future. What OS are you using?

egadgetboy Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Actually, if I run the EXE I can start the app fine, but get the blank screen in Configuration. egadgetboy Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 Since interest in supporting me here seemed to end on 06/26, I have chosen to reinstall XP on my arcade PC and will wait until some of the latest GameEx bugs are worked out before proceeding again.
Draco1962 Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 A reinstall may not be a bad idea. It appears from what you have posted that there are permissions issues preventing you from updating registry entries, etc. I am not sure that there is much anyone can do to resolve those types of issues as it then becomes a matter of troubleshooting the OS and not GameEx. If the reinstall does resolve the issue or you find a resolution in troubleshooting the OS, please let us know as this is something new to us and will help us to help steer someone else towards a resolve of their issue.

I had this problem when the UAC dialog would popup messing up it's maximize. Try alt-tabbing to the UAC dialog and give it permission and/or alt-tab to the Setup Wizard window.

I don't think that is the case I just think we do not not know what else to suggest other than reinistall. This is not a problem that other people are having or has happenned before. Hope you understand. We dont always suggest a reinistall until right at the end because of the work involved so we have not lost interest just dont know what else to suggest.

It is possible that there could be an issue with recent "hot fixes" for XP SP3 that were initiated 6/16 per this TechNet article. Not that all hot fixes should be held suspect, but I have seen where a hot fix applied to a file that was previously installed incorrectly or not at all will cripple functionality of another application. This would probably be reaching as diagnosing OS issue without direct access to the system is problematic and vague at best.
