windowpains Posted August 7, 2010 Posted August 7, 2010 Please help, I am a registered user who decided to open up GameEx and thumb around for the first time in a few months. It said I needed an update so I updated, then, on the restart, it crashed. I tried to find info in the forums and just got lost. So I installed the program from the downloader available online and it worked after the install with all my tweaks in place as they should be. Then the dreaded warning about it being out of date came up and since this concerns me I tried once again to update and had a repeat incident. I am including a screenshot of the error screen which came up after the update/restart. Maybe you can tell me what's wrong.

If that doesn't work, you can clear the GameEx cached files (look in C:\GameEx\Data).

I am afraid to delete any of them because there is about two years of organizing that I don't want to lose.(last played, Uncle Fester's Quest for NES, played and finished!)

I just deleted my cached files and had no problem and brought GameEx online and was able to get into my games without a problem. The cache will rebuild itself. The purpose of a cache is to load a copy of frequently used files for rapid reuse instead of having to load the file from its original source location. This occurs in Internet Explorer and Firefox. Occasionally, a cached web page (also known as a temporary internet file in IE-speak) will not get overwritten completely when a new page is present at a website you visit. This can result in the familiar "Page cannot be displayed" errors, being kicked back to a logon prompt, etc. When you clear the browser cache, you are forcing the browser to reload a fresh copy of the web page from its source - the new page will be written to the browser cache.The same concept applies to GameEx (and other programs as well). You are not deleting anything that is "mission critical" to your setup. Your ROMs, snaps, artwork, etc. will all be where you placed them.

I wonder if there may not be some conflicts with the skinner he is using.And yes, it is really, REALLY green! In a "When Mars Attacks the Exorcist" kinda hue.

I guess it was still building the necessary files. Anyway, I am very happy to see it working. Thank you for your help!Yes I do use skinning programs, mainly the Object Desktop package from Stardock. I have run into a couple of situations where certain settings within one of the included programs have prevented applications from running correctly. Namely, the Newest WindowBlinds has an option to skin explorer windows too but when I have it activated, it prevents my thumbnail previews from displaying. This is not typical of Stardock's programming and I suspect that it is something I did wrong or a bug they will correct in time. I do see a new problem with GameEx and need to know if it will be solvable here or if I need to start a new thread. When I browse for a video on my hard drive and play it within GameEx, it crashes the computer with a blue screen of death whenever I try to exit the movie. I have K-Lite codecs installed and wonder if there is a conflict that is causing this. If you guys are familiar with that issue your help would be much appreciated. If you guys are familiar with that issue your help would be much appreciated.Try the Vista Codec Pack (after uninstalling K-Lite codecs).

More likely it might be a setting in GameEx which is trying to utilize codecs already incuded with GameEx at the same time as the K-lite. or some small thing like that. Just a guess. I really have never seen this kind of crash before.

I really have never seen this kind of crash before.Nothing wrong with skins ('cept maybe the green one ). I am not 100% certain, but since it is receommnded to install codec packs in addition to GameEx, there is probably little if any in the way of codecs native to it. I have had good luck with the Shack codecs, others Vista.
