Need More Skins!!!

Tom and Members,

So we have here what looks to be the most powerful MAME frontend out there.

What would make this product better? More skins!!!

My fav so far in Arcade 800 x 600. But it would be nice to have more choices!! I've checked out "Night" and "Funs" themes are they are a great start but the closer we can get to skins like MameWah has the better this FE will be.

I'm not a graphic designer, but for those of you out there your skills are needed!!

I've been sort of holding off sharing a couple of skins until Tom is able to implement a little more customization from a skin standpoint. That being said, since 5.17 allows font resizing, I may get around to editing one of them this weekend. If I get a chance, I'll post some images and see if anyone is interested. It's a Slikstik based theme. I wanted to match their marquee they shipped with the cab until I finalized my own design.

I would also like to see some graphic-related improvements. I'm having issues with the way the logos (On the left side of the screen) are rendered; unless square, a black border shows around them. I'm sure this is something that is part of the display environment, and not a fault of GameEx's. And although I do understand there are technical issues, it'd be nice to have full alpha-transparency png's and such. I'd like more, but I really think that we have yet to fully explore the options that we do have available. Also, wasn't there talk of a theme forum?

yea i noticed that when i tryed to make a logo it endes up haveing black stuff around it.

i got ride of that problem by makeing the background just one color and then leave the background on the logo as the same color as the gameex background

i agree and thats was why i started on the theme project site (there is under construction) but due to some private matters i had been away from the scene for a while but i can asure you all the site will be done and i have continued on it again

thx Tom for being so understandable about the matters.

so i would like all the authors there have any martials Themes/logoes ect ect to PM me so it can be on that site and should be a minor part of the GameEx site..

so all hang on for a little while still

its still possible to do alot with GameEx even its not as skinning powerfull (yet!) as mamewah i would say its more to the users fantasy and creativness to make som nice themes/skins ...

im working on one atm as well trying to make it alittle non standard but takes time becouse the possitions have to to be 100% correct becouse you cant move things around like you can in Mamewah

Or if everything would look exactly the same in different resolutions, like flash web pages. Then skinning would be a joy.

If things (screen shot positioning and such) gets better lined up (i.e. easier to skin around) then I might do a couple of skins. It would be nice if you could have "layers" in the skin with different apperance. If say the bottom layer was animated, and the layer on top of it wasn't but had transparency support, wow! That would be cool. Parallax scrolling GUI!

i hope tom will work on gameex so we can do some crazy skins for it like mabye be able to move the buttons around,move where the screenshots are and many othere things

cuz for now we are limited to changeing the background and just the colors and logos

my idea are to use the default skin as a guide and then try forth and back with some combinations to see what looks nice

anyway thats how i got the feeling about some things and its not that limited as many thinks it just takes alittle longer time becouse the possitions have to be 100% correct

as i promissed i would make a Screenshot of the newest theme im working on

(it will be alittle more time before its gonna be ready still some isusses im not happy about) and are working on differents layouts for each emulator as well so its not the same for each emulator ...

so dont expect it to be ready soon becouse im working hard on the upcomming Skin home-page as well ...

but just to give a impression you can do alot with GameEx as it is ...

Excellent progress!!!

I think your taste for porn girls is kinda funny actually... You might consider a G rated version and x rated version if you release these to others. Some of us have kids and would love to use your skins minus the naked girls!!!

Only other comment is I always hated any blue color that remins me of windows. Main reason I don't use the default skin for GameEx and use the Arcade One instead.

I really like where you are headed. We are very glad you are hear. Soon we will have skins better than Mamewah... The front end already is so why not the skins too!!

you got a good point ill remove the girl (she isnt revealing anything but i understand it perfect) i was just browsing for atari martirals and found that picture but didnt think of your point

to the blue style i might do some differents color layouts ....

its still in process so still time for changes

Here's the skin that I've been working on for a while. It's strictly for MAME use and designed to used with my X-Arcade based cab (in the making), that's why there's menu instructions in the bottom right corner of the "shot". Since I can't get windowed mode to work, I took a digital photo instead.

As you can see here, I'm not using the Title text (this is the All MAME games "page").

Some things that I would like to get done to GameEx but I understand isn't likely to happend is moving the gameinfo (1941 - Counter Attack etc) so it aligns with the gamelist below. This would look much better, but I guess it involves a lot of recoding.

Also, I think that an option for getting a border around mng's would be easy on the eyes. Here I've done my own solution for this.

And finally, the "select bars" get a bit stretched out as you can see if you watch the edges closely.

Looks really nice emphatic. I would really like to see more themes using black backgrounds. I think they look great being dark like an arcade cabinet is. I notice alot of MameWah skins go for the dark backgrounds. Why not GameEx? Personally I like mine to look more "arcadey" than Windows Media Centre.

thats kinda funny one layout i have maded have the same "bricks" as background hehe same ideas for some of the projects your selector bar as well nice

does your bar lighten up and down ? mine does rotate in the colors
