I see on the main Game Ex forum there are extra dat and ini files to download.

history.dat

MAME Game information and history.

Provides Game descriptions for GameEx.

http://www.arcade-history.com/

catver.ini

MAME Game Category information.

Provides Game categories for GameEx.

http://www.mameworld.net/catlist/

MAMEInfo.dat

Detailed MAME game information.

Provides Recommended Games for GameEx.

http://www.mameworld.net/mameinfo

NPlayers.ini

MAME game number of players and play type information.

Allows GameEx to create the multi player simultaneous game list.

http://nplayers.arcadebelgium.be

Controls.ini

Provides information about the controls used by MAME games

Allows GameEx to create and display a control panel for games.

http://fe.donkeyfly.com/controls/controls.php

Are all these not part of Game Ex or Mame when I install it?

Are all these extras I need to download and install myself if I want those features?

Thanks.

I'm a bit confused about this too, because looking in the Advanced Config I see paths listed for them, and when I check the folder they are already there.

The ones you have linked are a different date and size, so I wonder which ones are actually newer. Seems a lot of those sites aren't updated anymore...

Yeah, Some are included.. This is why when you build the mame game list when you first install gameex you have categorys/history info. and when it displays the control panel it shows you some buttons the game used etc... The files arent updated too much but im sure the ones off those sites may be newer.

Also you may want to grab the cheat.dat

add the -cheat switch to the mame options.

Then when you press TAB you get a new menu for cheating.. Like infinate lives/ super jump etc...

Games like Simpsons bowling REQUIRE you to enable a cheat before the game will run.

Perhaps thats why circo doesnt have an emumovie of it running..

Ill pass that info along.

No $hit! I was wondering why I was never able to get Simpsons bowling too work but it always said it was a working rom. NICE!

Can you provide a little more detail as to what cheat you have to run to get Simpsons Bowling too work?

...and more or less on the above. Download it all and then update the game list after putting the files in the correct dir?

To enable the game to boot up, hold F2 the whole time during the first boot-up. Let it write EEPROM. You only need to do this the first play.

You can put them wherever you want, but you need to make sure the paths are set correctly in GameEx. I personally keep all my dat and ini files in my MAME directory, but GameEx uses a default location in the C:\Program Files\GameEx\DATA directory if I'm not mistaken.

I just update the defaults for now by overwriting those files but where do you set those paths in Game Ex?

Use the GameEx Advanced Configuration utility and select 'Advanced MAME Settings'. On the first page near the bottom is 'Catver ini location'. You can also set the path for nplayers, history, MAMEinfo, and controls.
