Hi there!

I m experiencing stuttering issues on killer instinct 1.5d and mame32 since almost 2 months

tried all versions possible of mame without be able to fix that F*cking sound stuttering issue.

only MAME .109 was not affected, but instead, the sound timing is bad and the sound often distortioned.

so here is my configuration

C2D E6600 @3ghz

PC6400 2GB

Leadtek 7800GT

Audigy 2 ZS

Zindoze Vista Ultimate 64bits

I tried the follow:

-MAME, MAME32, MAME64 from version 0.110 to 0.122

-Windows XP, XP64, Windows 2003 Server, Vista 64 Ultimate.

Mame

-Disable Triple Buffer and/or V-sync →no sound stuttering but Image Tearing →NG

-Enable Triple Buffer and/or V-sync →no tearing but sound stuttering then sound complete crash→NG

-Tweaking emulation speed→Wrost than everything, stupidiest option added to mame→NG

I tried SDLMAME on Linux Ubuntu, it fixed sound stuttering but got sometimes glitches in the sound, depending the position of the moon and the stars...→NG

So, as i m only playing Killer Instinct and some other Midway games, have you any suggestion?

can someone post his/her mame.ini configuration that have no issue with killer instinct?

Sound stuttering is an issue that is poisoning every mame users and mamedev team is aware about it..why does they not fix it?

please, help me!! :o :o :o

I haven't really gotten into KI, but I remember reading that there were a lot of problems with it in MAME. As a result of less than perfect emulation, there is an emulator that has been put together that JUST emulates KI and KI2. Only problem is, I don't remember the name and a quick google search didn't help me remember. Anyway, one of the other guys probably uses it (nologic or Brian probably at least know the name of it I'm sure).

Unfortunately Killer Instinct emulation seemed to get worse for certain machines after with the newer releases of mame for some reason. Search Killer Instinct on the mameworld forums and you'll find many people with problems. I specifically had to setup an older version of mame (v0.113 or prior) for KI on my old machine to run it better. Not sure that you can launch alt versions of mame in GameEx but this may be one thing to check independantly first, see if it runs in a .113 or prior version of mame ok outside of GameEx.

Another thing you may want to try is setting up a custom ini file just for Killer Instinct and using only -waitvsync, not -triplebuffer. I've found -waitvsync fixes tearing probs without messing with the sound. It would go something like this:

Inside of mame-->ini folder make a text file named kinst.ini with something similar to mine below. You can use whatever commandline switches you want but be sure to include the waitvsync 1:

## kinst ##

screen0 \\. \DISPLAY1

switchres 1

hwstretch 0

bezel 0

backdrop 0

waitvsync 1

resolution 320x240

resolution0 320x240

That'd be my only other idea. Good luck!

It is U64.

I used it a long time ago when i was on a Celeron 466mhz Laptop. It was amazing that the game ran at full speed and sometime to fast on a crappy cpu like that.

But as it worked well on 98 SE, it became bad on W2k, XP and vista. crash often..

Only mame can emulate corretly KI

shaunoppp:

thank fo the advise, i will try it today after the work.

Triple buffer does the stuttering, i was pretty sure. so my last solution was to found a way to not use the Triple buffer and be able to erase the tearing effet.

I m playing on a LCD monitor with 1024x768 native resolution.

also use the aperture grille effect by Aaron Giles wich give a crisp aspect of the picture.I know that is does not affect tearing or stuttering, disabling it does not change anything.

Also, SDLMAME work perfectly with Killer Instinct, but seem there is a bug that affect the emulator and there are stuttering (but far away of MAME 32)randomly.if you swith from opengl to soft emulation, the stuttering disappear and tearing appears...LOL

tried with SDLMAME 32 and 64 bits, made build myself with core 2 duo optimisations, without optimization. built it on Ubuntu 7.10, Fedora 8 x64 and vista Ultimate.

can someone give me a link to download old mame32 build? i want the .106 and .109...

I use mame 122 and KI and KI 2 run fullspped on my laptop.

Core duo 2ghz 2gb memory. Im not sure why you are having so many issues. Is frameskip set to 0 or auto.

Anyways the U64 emu has really bad timing. Thus not very good emulation

Id go for mame build .96 you can find it on mamedev.org under previous releases. There is a thread where I mentioned a place to grab mame32 builds but cannot find it. Im constantly posting so its tough going through my logs. And google isnt giving me exactly what Im after so far.

Anyways Id be more than happy to share my cfg with you. Can you post your log? Also have you tried the game outside gameex?

KI was broke for quite a few builds but has been fixed for the last few releases. There are a few threads here about it.

Id check into those as they expain how to get it setup in gameex using emulated games. Not that I mind repeating myself Im just too tired to go into it further right now.
