Hello!

I was looking to add some extra authenticity for my kids to enjoy my cab, so I want to invest in some coin doors for my WIP cab. Good idea or no? Is there a way that I could get them set up so it makes a sound when a quarter is dropped in? I don't really want to require quarters to operate the game, but I do want the effect. You know what I mean? Like, say, my kid can drop in a quarter and hear a sound when it happens, but that would have nothing to do with actual credits themselves... It'd be like a glorified piggy bank without any actual incentive to add quarters.

Here's the type of coin door I will be looking at purchasing:

Only difference would be I wanted a four coin door instead of a two. The space is already there (it's an old refurbished NBA Jam TE cab).

Ideas? Criticisms?

I'm confused  Do you want the coin door to work as a credit mechanism or just as a piggy bank? And you want to be able to do something so a sound fires that sounds like a coin dropping?

As far as the sound goes, I would look into either getting a cheap mp3 player and putting a few tracks on that sound like a coin dropping (a few different types for variety). Then, link the coin switch to the button on the mp3 player that plays a sound (you will have to hack the mp3 player to do that. This will only work if you can get an external power adapter for the mp3 player AND you can set it up so that if you hit play, it plays one random track and then stops. ALTERNATELY, you could wire up the coin switches to an input on your encoder/gamepad hack/etc. Then, set an AHK/AI script to play the sound file when that button is pressed. In fact, you could probably set it up that way so that if several coins entered before the file finished playing, it would play it overlapping.

Damn...one more set of ramblings for the record. -_-

Ok, then what I suggested could work fine. It depends on if you want the sounds to work when the machine is off. If so, then you would need an mp3 player. If not, then a computer could be used.

Just a side note though. The coin door should come with a catch basin which is metal. So you will hear the coin fall in anyway. Maybe you should try it and see if it provides the sound you want as is...

EDIT: On second look, this is just the coin door and doesn't include the box. I haven't looked, but you might be able to find one that includes the box as well and you wouldn't need to worry about the sounds.

I rigged my cab to accept coins.

I just connected the 2 wires (on each coin slot switch) to the "hidden buttons" that I set up for coins. I also connected the lights to the wires on the computer fan so it lights up as well.

Now not only do they work as secondary coin buttons, but they light up and look cool. This adds a great touch!

Usually, depending on the game your playing, you'll hear a unique "coin accepted" sound as well as a credit. You'll also hear that great coin drop sound that we all love.

I think that would be your best bet...

good luck!

4 door coin doors are expensive so I think your best bet is finding one used on ebay or a local dealer/arcade repair shop. I got 3 working coin mechs for $30 at a local arcade machine repair shop.

Once you have one I wouldn't rig an mp3 player or scripts for sounds etc., it's just easier at that point to actually hook it up and have it accept credits for the games like it's meant to in my opinion. Your talking 8 wires to hook it up to your keyboard encoder, a couple more if you want them to light up.

For those interested, Happ make a 'fake' coin door that's cheap but merely for aesthetics. http://www.happ.com/coindoors/40071300.htm

I am somewhat using my arcade cabinet in the same way as a glorified piggie bank. My cab already had coin buttons on the panel. However, I still wanted a coin door for aesthetics to use maybe for a piggie bank. I patiently lurked on E-bay for a month, and luckily found a used, 4-slot coin door for $60. It was in excellent condition and came pre-wired, with lights, coin mechs, and coin bucket. The coin bucket was too tall to use within my cab (Mameroom II). However, after I removed coin mechs, so it could accept any coin, I had enough room for the bucket. To power the lights I used a 12v source off the back of my computer from a special power connection slot I added. Later on, I may turn the coin return button, into coin buttons themselves as well as put USB connectors behind the coin return flaps for when I need to plug in special controllers, like a set of dance pads.

Speaking of coin mechanisms, does anybody here knows where I can get a top coin entry mechanism? I'm working on a mini cabinet and the only place it could fit right is on the control panel.

The only one I have seen is from Happ, but it is $55 for the mechanism, + $26.65 for the Chrome top, + $10.05 for the coin return cup. $90+ for what is probably $10-worth of hardware (not to mention their legendary shipping charges) is a tad too much for my taste.

A guy over on BYOAC wanted a program that would play a sound whenever a coin was dropped into his mech. So here is the program. It plays a 1up.wav file (which you can change) when the 5 key is pressed (default for P1_COIN). If you need it modified in some way I'm sure it would be easy enough to do. You can place the file in the Startup folder and it will run all the time.

Go over to BYOAC and check out the B/S/T thread. You can check with Ponyboy or Divemaster127 to see what their prices are for it. The are Happ distributors and are much cheaper than Happ for parts AND shipping.

You can also post and ask if anyone has one for sale.

Good luck.

Sweet! Just what I was looking for! Thanks, HK! ;)

Thanks. I emailed both of the sources mentioned, and one of them is getting me a quote for the Happ's top coin entry mechanism.

If anybody here knows of any other top feed coin mech please let me know. It could suit my purpose even better than the Happ model.
