7zip filter to choose certain roms in a Goodmerged set?

Hey guys!

I've searched all over so forgive me if my searching skills are lacking... :)

And this might be bordering on a New Feature Request... but here it goes...

I'm looking for a way to have GameEX launch a game from my 7zipped Goodmerge set based on a filter hierarchy...

For example...

Super Mario Brothers.7zip

This file has A TON of extra crap in it... all I'm really interested in is the one I played as a kid... all I want is the (U) version... (although I DO like having ALL the known roms for a given game which is why a No-Intro set doesn't appeal to me... I just done't need or want to play them... it's the completist in me!)

Is there a way to have GameEX lunch the (U), (J), or (E) version automatically without me having to wade through 100's of frivolous fluff without me having to UNGoodmerge them?

Or maybe just have GameEX filter the available roms from within a 7zip to just (U), (E), and (J)?

I was reading in a pretty old forum (not GameEX realated) about a program called Quickplay... Here's part of that conversation which got me thinking about how I wish GameEX had this capapbility:

QUESTION:

The way Quickplay works, you make a virtual folder that maps out to different folders, and set paths to games and emulators. The natural choice is to make folders for systems (SNES, Genesis, etc..), but also note that a virtual folder isn't restricted to only one real folder or even all the files within a folder. Hence you could make a genre setup (Roleplay, fighting) or a year folder (1990...) and put games from different platforms into them. Once setup with the games and emulator paths, you simply find the game you want (which becomes 10X easier with Goodmerge) and click it to play the default emulator (Quickplay supports multiple emu's for a single console).

So if I have like 10 roms in a 7zip file, how does Quickplay know which one to load?

ANSWER:

Each virtual folder is set to look for three flags by default. The order is (U) for USA, then (E) and (J) for Europe and Japan in that order. You can customise it to look for pretty much any Goodset language and (Unk) unknowns, (PD) Public Domains and (Unl) unlicensed. If the preferred ROM isn't found, any rom will be launched.

Can GameEX do this? Or is there a workaround?

Thanks guys!

I have to say this community is second to none! I've enjoyed my stay here immensely and look forward to many more years of gaming bliss... with GameEX, of course!

I dont have any goodmerged sets... I wonder if you can change your romfilter to "*(u)*.zip" Without quotes... In a DOS prompt using the DIR Command this will only show files that have a (u) in the name along with the ZIP file extension.

Id try it.. If it doesnt work you can just change it back :)

You could add it to the most wanted features thread. I don't know if that one is still going or not, but it wouldn't hurt to bump it up to the top. Maybe Tom will take a look when he gets a chance.

ya this is pretty much why i don't have goodmerged sets. thanks to pimpdaddy i was able to delete all the non-(U) roms with a few strokes of the mouse. that program kicks ass stu.

You can use UnGoodMerge to extract and re-compress individual ROMs from a GoodMerged set, using a highly customisable and comprehensive filtering system to do most of the selection for you. I know it's not exactly what you asked for, but it should still be useful.

You should just rebuild your set so you don't have all the extra junk. I rebuild mine to No-Intro sets. I think it's the way to go.
