Hi!

I'm loving it so far, but I'm having a couple small problems... and just a few questions.

1: It does not show any of my NEO GEO games in the list. I have checked both the "MAME Originals" and the "Neo Geo" subsections. I'm a bit confused, because if I just use mame32 regularly(with no frontend) I can play them just fine. Is there a setting for detecting BIOs that I have missed?

2: Is there an easy way to scroll by letter in the rom directory? I have over 1000 roms and it's way too much of a hassle to scroll one by one... Any alternative solutions?

3: How do I set GameEx to start up automatically from windows start?

and a question about donations, how exactly does the donation key work? what if I lose it, or uninstall gameex and want to reinstall? can it be used on more than one computer at a time?

Hi and welcome,

1) Not sure about this, but check your filters and allow working, I think that happened to me (basically, if the rom is not 100% right, it will still work)

2) Alpha paging to on. This skips to A when you pres A , etc. Also, press down and Fire 1 at the same time skips to the next page

3) If you want to put GameEx in a cab, try Tom's instant sheller

When you get your key, just back it up on a disc and keep it. Reinstalling GameEx wont affect it. If you want to run multiple copies, you can, but I think another donation would be an honorable way to go about it for another use? Just a suggestion.

Hope this helps,

Johnny

1. Your rom set may not match the build your using of MAME...there have been a lot of changes in the past few versions...so make sure the roms match the correct build of Mame.

2. Hold your button 1 down and then press the joystick down or up...depending on which direction you wish to go through the list.

3. Well you can copy its shortcut into the Start folder...there is also some thing called Instant Sheller I think that takes you more directly into GameEx with out having to login....its listed in the FAQ

Well it gets emailed to you...then you follow the directions in the email and your all good....if you lose it...more than likely Tom has a record and can reissue you the same key...the key does not restrict its self to a single system...tho the idea is donate per system...tho not really enforced...but by no means does this mean it should be shared with all your buddies other wise you may find it revoked. I personally have one key and its used on two systems...my main Comp...and my HTPC.

Damn I"m getting slow

You might need to search for a NEO GEO bios. There's a website out there somewhere with all the updated MAME bios files. Also, try hitting update list under the MAME. Unlike consoles where you can just stick roms in the rom path and gameex will pick it up, you have to refresh the MAME list from within Gameex. There's an option to turn on the update list somewhere in gameex. Hope this helps.

How can I be sure if my rom set matches my mame setup? Like I said, my neo-geo and cps3 roms work when I use mame outside of the gameEx frontend, but can't get them to show when using gameEx... hmm, I'll have to mess with the filters like JohnnyG suggested...

but that'll have to wait till tommorow, heh, I didn't expect such a fast response, I was just going to post and check on it tommorow

Hi DB,

I cant check for sure as I'm not in front of my PC, but I think the filters should be Allow Imperfect, Working Only, then refresh your list in GameEx.

Nologic: heh, sorry about that, but give me a chance to try and give a little back!

Doom bucket -

Well you would need to grab a copy of clrmamepro and use that...but if you didn't know that...I'm not about to try and instruct you how to use it...for one I'm no expert, and if things are done wrong you can really mess up your roms.

Google for a tutorial on it...its mildly complicated but not bad once your use to it. Make a backup of your roms prior to toying with it tho.

I'd highly suggest you learn and get comfortable with clrmamepro along with TorrentZip as they will save you tons of time and bandwidth. Also learning the basics of AutoHotKey &\or AutoIt (prefered) for those odd ball times when you need to script around some thing...tons of sample code floating around there for both. Also getting a hold of good text editor for scripting SciTe, PSPad, UltraEdit (prefered),...If you are working with multiple systems in any fashion network them and learn to use Remote Desktop or like application...well really not much to learn there other than just setting it up. ;) Grab your self a decent file manager Directory Opus (prefered), xplorer²,... you can find a fairly decent review of some of the more popular ones here. Also you should grab some fairly standard shell extensions as they will greatly ease your journey into GameEx bliss...a good starter pack can be found here, with "Run Program" being the most helpful as it maintains a history of command line values you have ran on a given executable. Theres tons of other suggestions that can make things a lot easier...but...to much change in how one does things all the sudden can have a negative effect as well.

JohnnyG-

hehe okay but just this one time. j\k ;)

i too have a problem with the neo geo sub section.

the games show up fine in the "all mame" section but not under neo geo.

it stopped working when i used mame 116u3 which i believe when the re-write of the neo-geo driver was submitted. i think this may be causing the problem.

roms are fully audited using clrmamepro, full/correct romsets, neo-geo bios is there etc... tis a weird one

edit - and hi btw, first post yay.

Ok guys I agree with no logic about CLRMAME...You might need it.

If you use MAME32 goto file and AUDIT ALL GAMES...It wont rename your rom set like CLRMAME but it will tell you more or less how compatable your romset is. Also download catver.ini and any other supplmentle INI you can find. like history.dat nplayers.ini... Bascally any thing gameex will let you configure in the advanced config under MAME settings.

Once that is configured. Update the games list.

This should sort you out.

As far as the instant sheller is concerned. hit CTRL+ALT+DEL.. If you have changed the cursor into the black dot you will have to use TAB. Goto file new task. type EXPLORER this SHOULD bring the windows desktop back. And you can goto Gameex advanced config and in the LAUNCH ON EXIT feild you can put explorer.exe This way when you exit gameex it goes into windows explorer.

Additionally Instant Sheller has the option to SHELL PER USER ACCT(If you chose that boot into safe mode and log in as that user) . So what you should do and it is what I do is.

1. Create two USER ACCTS both administrator. Configure windows to automatically log into one of the user accts and use instant sheller to only install for that user.

2. When you want to go into OS simply log into the other acct. (However I use Terminal Services and RDP into my cab from another pc on my network. I log in as the other user acct and gives my cab a more authentic look.. no keyboards no mouse..I use a Tv and youd never realize it was windows based. )

If you want to UNDO it run REGEDIT.Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

"Shell"="Explorer.exe"

NOTE THERE WILL BE MORE INFO IN HERE BUT ONLY WORRY ABOUT SHELL.

Good luck... Remember always back up the reg before changing it.

I saw the same issue, just wasn't sure what caused it. This is the likely answer.. What's the solution?

I went from mame 115 to mame 117 by just overwriting the programs executables and copy and pasting the new roms into the roms folder and doing an audit game lists. I always grab all the DATS and INI and other funn stuff and Update gamelist.

I have never had a problem..neo Geo has always worked..MAME did chage the the way the driver functioned (trying to make it more accurate) but the required bios never changed.

You can always aquire another set from one of the many torrent sites. But Id try getting the dats and INIs first.

I'm not sure we're on the same page..

All neo-geo games are working, and show up fine under all mame. They do not (and did before) show up when you choose 'neo geo games' from the mame sub-menus. Obviously not a big deal, but strange all the same.
