Hi all, I just tried to get the manual viewer plugin working.

I downloaded the OfflineGameManualInstall.exe file from the GameEx homepage and ran it. I got asked if I wanted to add two entries to the registry, which I did.

When I try to view a manual it is listed, but if I click on the item, Gameex immediately returns to the menu, as if not recognising that there is a pdf.

Anyone familiar with this problem?

argen i don't use the manuals, maybe i'll get into it soon, but there was a previous thread on this issue. from what i read, make sure you have the latest version of gameex, and make sure you install the plugin and have adobe acrobat. have a look. hope this helps.

P.S. and i think you have to be a registered user.

Yes it may have been my post you read under 'vista issues'. I hadn't realised that Acrobat had to be installed... probably a spout of needing to RTFM and I apologise to Tom if so. I'll check this out when I get back from work and report back.

Thanks for the reply guys,

however, I already have acrobat reader 7 installed, but I can't open the manuals (in pdf format) from within GameEx (no problems if I open them directly from windows). Do I have to install a separate adobe plugin for media center? Is it enough to run the OfflineGameManualInstall.exe file from the GameEx homepage?

I can't see what I am overlooking here..

Yes, it is possible to install the plugin that way.

Just try and reinstall it and see if it works.

Keep us posted on your results! :)

OK, I uninstalled adobe reader 7.0, and reinstalled adobe reader 8.0.

The problem still persists after that. Then I downloaded and installed the file OfflineGameManualInstall.exe another time, but again..no success.

The manual appears in the menu list right under the box art/screenshot/titlescreen, so the path of the directory and the name of the pdf are correct. But again If I click it, the menu slides to the right as if loading something, but immediately slides back without loading the pdf.

Do I have to change something in the config of GameEx to point where adobe reader is installed, or should it work right away?

I'm puzzled.

OK- behaviour is inconsistent on my machine: the first point may or may not help stigt out. I have noted two significant problems:

1. usually you have to hold down the L key for a time before the controls dialog appears. It may be stigt that you're not holding the key down long enough for the instructions to appaer? Ideally, I guess, there's be a little egg timer appear immediately after the L key is pressed, followed by its eventual appearance. I'm not complaing though - love GameEx!!

2. I suspect this'd be a bit harder to fix, but in mame if you press P to pause (which I personally find the optimum time to call up the instructions viewer) and THEN hit L, the game temporarily unpauses in the background during the transition to the instructions screen. It then re-pauses when the instructions appear, but unpauses again while returning to MAME. Once MAME is again fully 'in focus', the pause state again comes into effect.

It may take a few re-reads of the above paragraph to get what I mean! Sorry! But it's a pain on my machine as one generally suffers 6+ seconds of unwanted 'unpausing' just by viewing the instructions.

Again - I'm not complaining, just trying to help. Tom - is it worth putting these points in the issues thread?

Any way stigt - good luck.

Midget:

I would say that you ougt to start a new thread since this one is more for the manual viewer problems Stigt is having. Your issues seem to be more to the Control Panel Viewer which are two seperate things.

Let me download a manual from somewhere and try this out. I have them working on my cab but I'm a version behind there. This may or may not be a bug, and I can't be sure without testing myself.

PS - The manual name and the ROM name are exactly the same, right?

Yes, they are the same (they must be, otherwise the item wouldn't show in the GameEx menu..)

I am curious if anyone can replicate this problem, or am I the only one??

Arjen

(Included example picture, you can see that the item "manual" is in the menu, so the name of the pdf is correct)

Has anyone been able to reproduce this error?

Can you post your full log?

Do you have this folder present c:\program files\gs?

Are you running 64 bit OS?

By the way Adobe Acrobat is not a requirement for the manul viewer.

I cannot confirm this unfortunately... I use the same OS as you and I am not experiencing this problem. I will try and view a MAME manual, but I don't think it makes much difference. I'll get back to you on my results.

Hi Tom, I am experiencing this with all emulators. An example is the one from which I took the screenshot, the "rom" of Dungeon Master, for WinUAE v 1.3.4

I have a PDF file of the manual, named exactly as the "rom", in the manuals folder, which I also set in the emulator config for WinUAE.

The manual shows up in the menu in GameEx, as you can see on the screenshot earlier in this thread, meaning that the folder and the pdf file are recognized.

When I select the manual option, the pdf file will not load, no error, nothing.

I attached the log and ini with the post.

Thanks for your efforts,

Arjen

Does this file exist on your system?

C:\program files\gs\gs\bin\gswin32c.exe"

Is your program files folder on your install set to the normal path. ie you have not used anything to tweak it etc?

Are you using standard XP Pro SP2?

Could you click Start > Run > CMD

Then put in the above, and let me know what it says.

Scrap that, please try the attached GameEx.exe replacement. Try and view a manual and post the log.

Thanks.

Try this.

Open Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\program files\gameex\

Right click the Data folder. Click properties.

Click the secutiry tab. Make sure all users on the syste, have FULL access to the folder, and nothing denied.

Click the Advanced Tab. Check the replace Child Permissions.

Click OK.

Click OK.

Delete C:\Program Files\GameEx\DATA\tmppdf.pdf if it exists.

I think that should fix the other problem
