It seems a bit ironic that people have been working on emulating the CPS-3 board since it's release in 1996. I seriously doubt that it took the programers more than a few months if not a few weeks to program the games for that board in the first place, meaning that writing code for each game from scratch would have been completed many times over by now...

But then, that's just part of the fun for those guys I guess

Yeah some people just love being told they can't do something just to throw it right back in their faces :) was piracy really so a big deal in arcade machines back then that they needed such a complicated protection system? From my reading in the past it seems that the actual protection system was the reason those games didn't do as well as the could've... seems like they shot themselves in the foot

No, ben! The point of MAME from beginning to now is to document and preserve the original hardware. If all the developers wanted was some fighting games, they'd buy an Xbox or something. They don't want these games and hardware to fall into obscurity just because some silly patent or copyright holder wants to sit on material. Emulation is not about making money, or about pirating software (some folks certainly blur the line)--it is about keeping the classics alive!

agreed, i do have my machine set up to take quarters for credits just to use as a piggy bank type deal, and for the nostalgia of hearing the quarter drop and a marvel credit sound off. BUT, the side pinball buttons are freeplay credits so it's not like you have to pay to play.

I know, but it just seems silly in some respect. This stuff should be recorded if possible, but the CPS3 games were on CD, so couldn't the documentation be a CD image

It's a hobby, so it doesn't matter if it makes sense to anyone else anyway. It's what makes those guys happy. And yeah, if people wanted to play a fighting game, they should just buy a Dreamcast! Then they could play all of the capcom fighting games natively just like they were in the arcade originally. :D

Yeah I agree. It seemed a little silly to spend so much time on it. But you know us computer nerds, the surest way to get something hacked is to tell us it's unhackable.
