yes sir, it was delete. thanks a lot kaze - nice to hear from you along with that. i have a follow up question if you don't mind... is there a way to (without deleting windows) have my pc boot directly the the C prompt (dos) whenever i turn it on? i'm asking because i've dedicated this 1.99 gigabyte windows 98 lunker to playing old dos games.

Nice to see you back on the forums too katuuuz :) You can indeed have 98 boot directly to the DOS prompt but it's been so long since I touched one even though I worked on hundreds of them years ago. From memory you can just edit the autoexec.bat and remove the line that launches windows but I could be thinking of 3.11 which was also around when I was a PC technician. A quick search on Google came up with this link that might help you out with that.

kaze, i have to hand it to you AGAIN. thank you so much. i turn on the system and it goes straight to dos for playing all those classic games i grew up with. and if i do want to use windows, i just have to type "win" at the C:>.

now my win 98 is running in 16 colors, so say i need to use the internet on this pc, all the pictures look scummy and you can barely make out what they are. do i have to buy a new video card to enable 256 color mode?! i have a newer dell model monitor that is compatible with this old dell, but i do have a standard pci grapihix card. i could've sworn before i formatted the c: drive it was more than 16 colors, but i think it was winme. i don't know i'm just thinking out loud.

head kaze, i was just trying to play police quest 4 after modifying my system to start in dos upon boot (that link you graciously gave me) and it says "fatal cannot detect mouse" but when i run it through windows, it is fine. just wanted to know if it makes sense to you.

You need to run a mouse driver in DOS, I believe it may be as simple typing MOUSE at the DOS prompt or adding that line into your autoexec.bat. Otherwise you may need to download a DOS driver for your particular mouse.

not working. i can't find mouse.com, nor mouse.sys on my hd. if i could have found them i could type "LH C:\WINDOWS\SETUP\MOUSE.COM"(.SYS)... i did find mouse.drv hidden in my system folder but tried the above command and it didn't work. it's wierd, cuz when i go to dos from windows my mouse works when editing autoexec.exe and msdos.sys, and of course in the games. if i can only find the command to do it manually!

Check out this page. It has the MOUSE.COM file your after.

thanks kaze, the mouse installs and i got by that no mouse error on my game, but now it's saying i have an audio.cpp error?! maybe it can't detect my sound card without going through windows? is there a way to insert another command in the autoexec.exe?

Again, a few seconds on Google...

Problem: "Unable to initialize audio hardware" or "Error number 29 ..\audio.cpp:1160:0:0", then the game quits.

Solution: This means your sound card is not compatible with the QG Sound Blaster drivers. Rerun INSTALL or SETUP and choose NO AUDIO for the AUDIO choice. You'll still get the music, but this may prevent conflicts playing digitized sound effects like doors creaking. If you still have problems after choosing NO AUDIO, rerun INSTALL or SETUP and choose IBM PC Internal Speaker for MUSIC.
