Pinballx changing global volume constantly.

Hey. so I use pinballx for visual pinball x and fx3. when I return to pinballx the volume (windows volume) is increased. when I volume down using the windows hotkey buttons the volume returns to where I left it. when I scroll through pinballx or launch a table the volume sometimes shoots back to very high. how do I stop pinballx from messing with my windows volume at all. I want it left where it was. and every time I exit a table and reload back to pinballx the volume is super high again.

Please attach copies of your pinballx.ini and log.txt file. May be the same issue, may not, but files essential if a bug or nailing a settings issue.

Make sure you attach the log file after running pinballx when you've had the issue

here are the files requested. In it I loaded star trek TNG and it happened when i exited. i dont think the log shows this. i have the pinballx volumes set to 10% for both the options. is this whats causing it?

here are my system specs.

windows 10 pro

AMD quad core processor.

6gb DDR3 Ram

Nvidia GTX 750

Asus Mobo.

2TB Western Digital Blue drive.

cabinet is an old williams fireball cabinet with 42" 1080p tv for playfield and 1366x768 monitor for backglass. has zebsboards encoder/plunger and a second encoder for extra buttons (service buttons , buy in button and extra flipper buttons for nudge / magna save.)

hope this helps narrow down the diagnosis.

You don't have any buttons mapped in PinballX?, are you using JoyToKey or similar - and how is that configured?

I'm not really sure if the issue could be there or not, but i only use direct button mapping in PinballX and don't have the issue.

So currently I’m using keys f8 and f9 mapped to volume up and down buttons on cabinet using joy2key.  This is because I have auto hot key script at startup linked to f8 and f9. This enables those keys to function as windows volume up and down. This is irrelevant tho as I had this problem prior to setting up volume controls this way. In fact I set it up this way so I could easily bring the volume back down on the cabinet after returning back to pinballx, as it always brings my windows volume back up to blaring when I exit a table. With one click of the windows hot key to toggle master (windows) volume down it brings it right back to the setting I left it at.

prior to this setup I had those volume keys mapped to pinballx volume up and down as well as visual pinball x volume up and down. It still happened that way also. This way really sucked when I tried to run pinball fx3 as there’s no volume controls settable in that game and it was set to blaring by pinballx before I launched the table.

id be willing to make videos showing evidence but I assure you it’s happening exactly as I’m describing it.

Please help! have I configured this wrong? I was going to try pinvol but I don’t thiamine that will help in my scenario as I’m only having the volume being messed with while I’m inside pinballx menu. Never happens when I’m playing a table on any platform.

All i can suggest is you try and see if there's any pattern to when the volume changes, does it do it if you leave it in attract mode with no key presses, is it always on a scroll left etc. You could also go back a few PinballX versions to see if it the issue is new, maybe @ode1979 already knows if this is a new thing or not. That'll help give Tom something to go on.  I would check joytokey mapping too, i don't know if it allows double mapping or not, if it does is there a chance you have a button mapped to two keys?

If the volume always goes up then there might be an option as a workaround for you to set volume at 100 in windows / Pinballx and then lower it on your speakers. That way it won't matter, but if you regularly change volume between games it won't be much use.

Well sorry for the late reply, i dont have acces to that game at the moment, its a game i built for a friend of mine and until i find a real fix i dont want to go back to his place and look for a solution, also my set up at home does not do that, even thouhg they are the same setup, i just simply cloned my drive to his system. I used xpader to give keyboard shortcuts to the usb encoder i use. mapped the volume keys to volume keys on xpadder.

Now to be fair, on his set up , pinballx does not turn the volume up, is until i load a game that the volume starts acting weird, so it might be something with vpx or futurepinball i guess. i need to go back to his place and pin point the real problem. see if it happens with all of the programs, or just on one of them. so once i get more info ill come back and post.

Yeah, that could be something else. Saw this post just yesterday about VPX changing volume https://www.vpforums.org/index.php?showtopic=45952&hl=. If you get chance try and work out if it occurs launching just VPX directly outside PinballX. Could be somehow clone related, as that post sounds like it may be using a clone too.

Cheers.

I think i found what the problem was, so i had to set the config file of pinballx to read only as some of the controllers get set to default after a couple of times pinballx gets fireup.  So lets say, there are some keys i dont use, so i just delete them in the config, i found that without seting the config file to read only, pinballx puts the controllers back to default as i mentioned before, so to get rid of that problem i use the read only option on windows. So lets say im using xpadder for certain keys, that i didnt knew they were the volume keys on the joystick side of pinballx, so one time i needed to mod something on the config file and forgot to set the read only option again, so pinballx added the deleted keys i had for volume on the joystick side, and thats why while playing or selecting a game the volume would go up or down, since xpadder was telling pinballx to move betwen games but pinballx was getting the volume keys at the same time. Hope i had explained myself. Hope this makes sence.  So that bieng said, is it really necesary to set the keys to default after a couple of reboots_ can pinballx not mess with the config once it finish with it_ i mean, if i delete some keys, i expect to those keys stay deleted, theres no need to set them back to default. Thanks for any help in advance.
