I meant to ask for you to try Tempest again and provide the two files for comparison. My apologies. It has been one of those weeks! Derp!

And these games work outside of GameEx you say? Do they work when you launch runitgame.bat? I can see you disabled bypass disclaimer now, so I have no idea.

I do have a spinner on my cab so will test myself later. I seem to recall you said you were having issues when launched from GameEx but not if launched from MAME itself and that is what I was trying to address by telling you to turn off those things and in your other topic too.

Cheers.

Yes, if I launch MAME alone without GameEx everything the spinner and artwork border shows up. I just tried running the runitgame.bat for Tempest and I get the same results. I tried testing with a few different games. The spinner works for some games through gameEx, but not everything. When I try the same games directly from MAME they work fine.

Well you still have the setting on which would screw with the artwork. You've still not turned that off..

Same folder, same version of MAME?

I attach a batch file which you can launch anywhere on your system which is exactly the same as launching from MAME directly.

The setting is off. I've attached my config file. Even with it off I get what you are seeing in the runitgame.bat. I'm using MAME .225. I tried the .bat file you created and same result. If I run MAME64 directly and launch Tempest everything works fine.

The other setting is the 60hz sync setting under display settings. That  may affect the artwork.

As for anything else, I've never experienced that issue in the last 15 years. I cannot help further. Sorry.

I figured it out!!!!!!!! When I first launch a MAME game in GameEx it creates a config file in the MAME root folder see attached. That config file does not update when there is a change, but GameEx always refers to that file. I deleted the tempest.ini file and launched it again and now the spinner is working.

I don't think GameEx is creating it either. If I launch a game from MAME it creates the ini files in the MAME Ini directory. If I launch it from GameEx it creates the ini file in the root directory. Not sure when the feature was introduced. I noticed when I launched games I didn't play before from GameEx the artwork and spinner was working. So, I went back and checked out what was going on with the ini files.

That is great!  Another question identified to ask as people migrate to the newer MAME builds.

It may be worth looking at how the file is created when first launched from MAME vs. GameEx to see the differences since GameEx influences the switches used via the integrated MAME support.
