hey all, i've searched far and wide on the internet and found some sites I can purchase 800mb 90min cd-r's. the reason i need them is to burn the game shenmue 1 and 2, for some discs are 740+ mb and won't fit on a standard 700mb cd. I was wondering if a retail store carrys them, I tried radio shack, circuit city, best buy, and walmart but they only have the 700mbs. do i need to buy them online?

edit: i was just thinking, will a dreamcast read a dvd-r?

Im 90 percent sure you wont find them in your typical retail outlet like bestbuy etc. I've also read mixed things about there quality and burn success rate. I read one forum saying the disc weren't very reliable. I may be wrong, or have read this awhile ago, but I think the best bet on where to find them would be online. The dreamcast won't read dvd's

Do you need a disc that large?

Its been some time since i burnt dreamcast games, but isnt there an option called 'overburn' in the DiscJuggler program? I was able to burn images over 700mb...i think it might be possible with images that large, but could be wrong :)

what does overburn mean? will it cut some of the game off? the only game i see over 700 mb is shenmue I and II. i will try the overburn though, just wondering what it means.

Overburn just means to use more of the space on the disc to store data than the format or disc is designed for. Most burning applications support overburn.

If I remember right, burning programs know of a safety limit for CD's. They're like a garaunteed burn limit that the CD will work properlly. If you have a drive that supports overburn, then the software will bypass and ignore the safety limit and 'overburn' beyond it to get more data on the disc. However, because you're exceeding the safety limit, your chances of having a succesful burn with full readability lessens...

Of course, I could be wrong. Thats just how I figure it is.

ok i'm burning marvel vs capcom 2 plus (version with a better soundtrack) it's over 700 mb and when i chose to burn in alcohol i did the raw doa and it's fine. thanks to everyone,.

Well if you ever need even more room than that per CD you could buy a Plextor drive, they support burning up to 1gig of data on a typical 700mb CD...there are pit falls tho...not all other CD reader's will see the data..or may see it as corrupt. How ever if its burned and used by a Plextor drive...you'll be fine. :)

Blu-Ray will make all this go away!! :D

Actually, I'm betting that your Shenmue discs either contain CD audio or MPEG material.

You can burn a S-VCD disc where the actual files are 800 MB in Windows Explorer on a 700 MB disc. The same with Audio CD's. The burner treats this type of data differently than regular data because there's no need for error correction which in this case gives you more room.

Read more here: http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/xcd.htm if you're interested.

If you rip a CD that's 80 minutes long for example and try to burn the .wav-files onto a CD-R as a CD-ROM, they won't fit, however, if you write them as CD-Audio, they'll fit. Cool, eh?

Well if you wanted to and have the time you could down sample the audio and video on the CD

If you take the movie off the disc that is 100 meg (25 frames per second) and re-encoded it to 20 frames per second - you could keep the video an it would be 80 meg

Or convert some audio from stereo to mono and cut filesize in half

I got the Shenue disk (actual Dreamcast disk) and the Broadband adapter so I can rip

Shenmue, if I remember, image on one of the disks exceeded 700 meg (I think it was 800 meg'ish)

Thats when I found out about down sampling and

*But not everything can be down sampled - I was struggling with making the image smaller, it fell off my project list

Also if anyone is looking to bug a Dreamcast BBA to play across the internet - only a few games utilize internet capabilities and even fewer utilize the broadband adapter. They assume you have dialup and wants phone number and ISP info...bah

But I luv my Dreamcast

Late jumping in here, but as an avid DC burner I should mention that alot of the 'overburn' for DC discs you speak of is just DIR data for your burning application.

Dreamcast rips have come down to a science and they use every compression tool imaginable to fit everything on one CD-R.

Also, since you're new to DC burning, you should know it's IMPORTANT to keep your burn speed LOW. I usually burn at 4x since it's important not to have any corrupted data on your DC game - trust me on this one! If you're 80% through a game and hit a bad sector, it sucks.

Any other burn-related questions ask away. Sorry I was so late on this one. :)

PS - 90 minute CD-Rs are way too expensive for what they do - you could be out as much as a Dula Layer DVD per disc if you make a mistake or there's a write error.

Did I mention how much I love my DC? ;)

Well, ya...just thinking about the next generation! Blu-Ray will take care of many storage issues! (that is what I meant by my comment)
