Networked mame! Cool stuff but can it be merged into Gameex?

Some of you already know about this, some of you asked for this in GAMEEX but check out

MAME++ (or MAME PLUS PLUS)

It's up there with 108 of Mame but has networking capabilities for head-to-head challenges

DDEmeMame (Japanese site)

Now this concept is WAY cool in my opinion but I can see issues incorporating this with Gameex

#1 Need a section in Gameex to control whether to turn on Kaillera server or not - and to somehow monitor it's health - if server gets stuck (I seen this happen once and need to kill the server and restart)

#2 In Gameex - you would need a way to see who is waiting to play and if you are running the same emulator and if you have that game available- cant challenge someone in Mame to Ultimate Mortal Kombat on Nintendo 64

#3 I dont think MAME++ has a commandline mechanism to - connect to a server, locate a user or even specify one exactly and join immediately

#4 I dont think there is a command line option for setting up a supported game - to run on a server - and to wait

There seems that there would be a lot of behind the scenes negociations to go on versus the normal expected functionality. Like now it's -start mame - wait a few moment - then send over OK ...OK...OK...OK (enough to get past disclaimers)

Now something like - query servers unless one is specified (like one you have running in your house perhaps)

Now look at everyone who is waiting to play

Now on that list of everyone -who is using MAME++ 108

Now on that list compare games waiting to be played to games I can play

If a match is made, make that a possible choice to challenge

Then you would need to do that same check on intervals because someone may have already challenged them and they are now off the list

Or

If you choose to challenge someone in a game - same thing

Need to determine a server to place challenge on then wait

But that could mean exit Gameex to MAME++ for a long time which might break the look/flow of Gameex that Tom S is developing (brilliant program by the way)

but.....if there where a way to get these toto work together....Talk about the Ultimate Frontend ..GameEx(treme)

Just babbling

this would be pretty cool for someone who has two cabinets, or two desktops, and wants to have a tournament or something. Otherwise, without an easy way to chat it would be cumbersome.

I didn't read the article much b ut I get the basics. Question though would this work with something like say xmen to where if you had two 2 player cabinets you could actually play 4 players in one instances of xmen?

Where did you get the joysticks, trackball, and buttons for only $60? I used ultimarc mag-stik plus for mine and they alone were $26 each. And the trackballs I have seen that act as a mouse for windows are around $100. They use usb and have integrated controllers, but even the ones without are still expensive. Oh and you should check out the ipac controller. The easy setup program and shift functions are REALLY nice. And thats a great price on the flat panel.

Rather than building a second cabinet, I am planning on using xbox control pads for player 3 & 4 that retract into the cabinet and have holders on the side when not in use. Since mame isn't made originally for networking, both networked machines would be showing the same thing on the monitors. The main point of networked games is to show different things for each person's perspective, so that they don't interfere with another's experience. Networked mame would seem only interesting for games that have a split screen, or were multiple screen such as Daytona USA, otherwise you have another monitor, PC, and cabinet that is essentially redundant. There are so few like that it doesn't seem worth it to build a whole other cabinet, unless you are talking about different locations--which also has problems. What do you think?
