stigzler Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 So, following the crapbox tragedy whereby they removed everyone's public links rendering years of posting images on forums knackered, I log on today to codeplex to find this: https://www.codeplex.com/ So now these buggers are withdrawing their free service. This means I'm gonna have a lot of work to do setting up my apps + transferring my documentations for all my projects. It leads me to recommend one thing - get your own home severs, men! That way you can run your own shit without having to rely on these buggers or fear data loss or faff. Seriously - with mine, I can run my own cloud, ftp server, http server, SVN repository, email server and 24/7 torrent client (for seeding all those mame artworks). With a plugin I wrote + Resilio Sync, you can use your PC just like you did crapbox. You could, if you wanted, I guess, set up so much more. I've recently splashed on a 32p per month (exaggerated, but very low cost!) webspace and through this I can run a forum, bug tracking service and documentation wiki for my projects. I'm guessing you could set all this up on your home server too. Take a look: https://sites.google.com/view/magoarcade/software In short - cut the cord - drop these buggers before they drop you. Quote
hansolo77 Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Home servers are the best. You just gotta have a little bit of know how. The other thing you need is an ISP that provides decent bandwith.. My server is great, but my upload speed is the schlitz. Quote
tthurman Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 I've had trouble subscribing to the "free" services for a long time, and so I don't utilize them without backups.....which sort of negates the whole concept. I've found the same false sense of security to exist in the world of vm's. People buying into the concept of moving to a vendor managed vm environment without a contingency plan are almost always disappointed at some point with the results. There is no one perfect solution, IMO. Quote
