Bizarrely, I think I finally approach the day where I'll start setting up my cab for it's final roll-out. This means getting everything tickety-boo with game assets too. So, I'm trying to get my head around the assets download system and have a few questions:

1) Where does GameEx.exe presently automatically download to? There's Folders under Media>Downloaded Artwork that contain various asset folders under Emulator names entitle the usual (snap, title, video etc). However, what happens if I set these paths manually in the emulator setup to different locations?

2) Where are these resources downloaded from? Is it Emu Movies? If so - does GE choose the highest quality vids for download?

2.5) The dreaded 'image/rom name matching.' How 'fuzzy' is GameEx's search on artwork compared to Rom names? Once found does it name it to match the Rom name precisely, or does it strip tags (e.g. region in brackets etc)

2.7) How does it name images for roms in Zip files. Lets' say Tekken.zip contains "Tekken (USA).iso" and "Tekken (JP).iso" What images would result from the GameEx auto download?

3) If I was 'starting from scratch' what is the best way to setup GameEx to get the fullest/most complete sets?

4) At present I have a whole load of standard artwork folders (snap, title etc) - that I've gathered via the EmuMovies download on various sets of roms over the years (different standards). Should I just merged them all into "Media>Downloaded Artwork"??

This is probably me tying my own head in knots, but any help appreciated!

I'm on my phone, so I can't give a super complete answer, but I can tell you a bit about my experience. I also had random files from all over the internet. I ended up just starting from scratch with EmuMovies. There's a bit of consistency there that you wouldn't get otherwise without a lot of extra work for yourself.

I used the EmuMovies downloader (you might have heard of the guy who wrote the program) to get everything. As for matching files it's pretty good. If something didn't download I went through the EmuMovies FTP and found the naming scheme that was used and renamed my game files accordingly. MAME and No-Intro sets were all recognized, but my ripped Wii and PlayStation games were sketchy.

One nice feature is that once all the media is gathered the downloader keeps track of the missing files. When you fire up the downloader it will automagically point you to updated and missing media files if you choose. It might take you a bit longer initially to get all of your media files, but you'll have less upkeep to deal with down the road.

I asked this question some time ago, and Tom indicated it pulls down the highest res available.

Did you ever decide on which side art?

Dammit! You had to mention the side art! :P

No. No I didn't... 2 years of coding is quite an awesome procrastination though, innit? :)
