OK, don't get ahead of things. Let's take this step by step.

Please provide the following information using Windows Explorer (again, we are not touching GameEx at this point)

  • What is the path to your Mame executable? For example, it might be something like this: C:\Games\Emulators\Mame_164\
  • What is the exact name of your Mame executable?
  • What is the path to your Rom folder? For example, it might be something like this: C:\Games\Emulators\Mame_164\Roms\
  • Please provide the exact name of a rom to test with. Please choose a classic, older game like pacman, 1941, etc.

We can continue after that.

Also, I am running GameEx Lite (simple mode) would that make any difference?

Unless you have an incredibly slow machine, there is no advantage to running GameEx Lite.

I just replicated your setup with a MameUI64 version of 0.164 and "pacman.zip" from a 0.161 Romset. MameUI64 shows all the mame Games on the list, but if you search the list (the searchbar is one benefit of MameUI) for "Pac-man (midway)" the game should show up on the list and load when double clicked.

I don't have a 164 version of Mame64 to test, but I did get the current 0.176 release. In the left pane you can press "available" to show the games available in the roms folder. Pac-man (midway) should show up and play when double clicked. If it doesn't show up or play, my guess it that your rom doesn't contain the necessary files from it's parent rom to play by itself. You'll need it's parent rom in addition to pacman.zip to play your rom. Alternatively, get another rom from a different source.

@imek Test your Mame setup by downloading the attached file and placing it in the C:\Emulators\MAME 0.164 (64bit)\MAME 0.164 Extracted folder. Next double-click MameTest.bat and you should see a CMD window appear along with pacman in a separate window.

Let me know if it works, and if it does, we can set Mame up in GameEx next.

@RIP-Felix EDIT: Hey Felix: I know I kind of just jumped in the middle of things here and I am sorry about that; but I think that we may be close to having imek having a command line setup working on his rig. From there, my thoughts are to setup GameEx so it is working there too. Then, once he has a working setup to go by, he can try other Mame flavors in that version (like MameUI).

It worked, pacman opened up. I guess I just don't know how to open it manually.

That's a relief.

@RedDog that's fine. It shouldn't matter now that he has confirmed that it does indeed run. GameEx setup should be strait forward now.

Ok so I altered the batch file you gave me to try and open primrage and it finally opened up. But just like in GameEx the game seems to load to 100% and then blacks out.

Mame is weird like that, just because you have the rom in your roms folder doesn't necessarily mean it can play. Mame roms can be "constructed" in various ways. Sometimes without its parent dependencies (usually to save hard drive space). However, this can be confusing if you download the rom you want and expect it to work like a NES rom, where nothing else is needed to run that rom. Please read this for more information.

That's FANTASTIC!!!!!

Now you can try setting up Mame in GameEX. I strongly suggest using the Integrated Mame functionality instead of the Emulator Setup. Set up the following in the Setup Wizard:

If you have not placed all of your 0.164 roms in the C:\Emulators\MAME 0.164 (64bit)\MAME 0.164 Extracted\ROMS folder, move them there now.

MAME Settings

  • Mame Path: C:\Emulators\MAME 0.164 (64bit)\MAME 0.164 Extracted
  • Mame EXE: mame64.exe
  • Rom Path/s: C:\Emulators\MAME 0.164 (64bit)\MAME 0.164 Extracted\ROMS
  • Leave the rest blank for now.

Advance MAME Settings

  • MAME Options: -window -joy -skip_gameinfo
  • Use Start/Wait: No
  • Bypass Declaimer/Warnings: Yes
  • Menu Under Games: Put MAME on Start Page
  • Only Working Games: Yes
  • Allow Imperfect Games: Yes
  • Verify Roms: No
  • Only Existing Roms: Yes
  • Use Game Filter: No
  • Leave the rest of the options as they are now...you can always turn options on and off after you have Mame running in GameEx.

Client/Server MAME:

  • Do you want to use Clent/Server MAME: No

AdvanceMAME:

  • Do you want to use AdvanceMAME: No

Enable/Disable Features:

  • Hide Update List: No

There are a lof of settings in the MAME configuration. The settings I suggested should list every working or imperfectly working rom. Once you have Mame working in GameEX, then you can look over and try the different options. At least you will have a working base to start from.

Then start GameEx and go into the Mame section. It should prompt you to Update your mame list. Hit ENTER to start it. If it does not prompt you, arrow down to UPDATE LIST, ENTER, and ENTER. Let it run until it's done. Note that if you have a lot of roms, it can take 10, 20, 30, or 60 minutes (maybe longer).

Once GameEX is done compiling the list, try running a few roms using GameEx. Choose pacman, then 1941, then a few other older roms. You can try Primal Rage, but I am pretty sure it will not work yet. We will get to that.

I applied all the setting RedDog described. Then I opend GameEx (not simple mode) Then I updated the GameEx game list. I was then able to see the games I wanted. Then I tried running pacman and it took me to a black screen and it just stayed black. I pressed the escape key and after about 10 seconds it just returned to GameEx.

Here are my Log and Ini files. I also want to mention that Pacman did open and work when I put  MAME 0.164 (64bit) in the Setup Emulator section, but not the integrated MAME section.

From what I can tell, your Mame setup in the Mame Settings does look good.

Would you turn off Hide Desktop in the Display Settings and try pacman again using rergular Mame (ie not the emulator setup)? Perhaps it will show something as to why it is not coming up.

I turned off the Hide Desktop option. Do you need the log and ini files again? The same problem persists.

PS:

I just saw that although House of the dead doesn't play on mame, it does on the Model 2 emulator which GameEx happens to have integrated support for. So once you point gameex at the model 2 emulator (there's a link to the emulators website on that page of the setup wizard) you should be able to see and play it (assuming it's fully playable, but it got further than I've seen it get with mame).

@RIP-Felix: I use -window in my options and it works for me. The reason I suggested it was so that if any messages popped up as GameEx or Mame was running, it would be more likely that he would see them.

@imek: I am having a difficult time reading your GameEx.ini. The forum sometimes does not handle quotes as well as I would like. Would you mind providing it as an attachment? When you make a post, there is a spot just above the SUBMIT REPLY button that you can drag a file to. I am hoping that if I load it up on my machine, I may be able to replicate the problem.

@RedDog I tried his mame options and I saw exactly what he was describing. A black screen was appearing and persisting, not a fail then return to GameEX (which means mame is still running in the background, you just can't see it). This was the window not drawing correctly, which when I press ALT+ENTER to go to full-screen disappeared and showed MAME correctly. I could press ALT+ENTER again to goto windowed mode again and then it draws the window, but not upon first launch from GameEx. I thought I'd have him give it a try, since he's still using it.

@imekTry pressing ALT+ENTER after launching pacman or 1941 when you see the black screen, if mame then appears, delete -window from "mame options".

On the first page of the setup wizard choose "custom" and press next. On the next screen you can check boxes next to the setup pages you want to display. Model 2, Daphne, Zinc, and etc can be enabled there. Advanced will go through all of them, but this way you can just choose the ones you need to change most often. Model 2 will appear just after the integrated mame setup page.

Once you have the model 2 emulator and set GameEx to point at it, House of the dead and other model 2 games will be displayed on your "All Mame Games" list after an update list. In addition, you can set  Show Model 2 Games" to yes in Advanced Mame settings to add a menu list specifically for model 2 games.

I deleted -window from the mame options. It still goes black, but then for a brief moment I see the loading screen and it says "loading Machine %0" and then it goes back to the GameEx program.

Ok @imek I think I have an another thing to try. Please clear your custom lists path and update your list again. You should only see the games in your roms folder, or thoes you placed in the Don't filter these roms field (Which I recommend you clear for now). Also, run GameEx in windowed mode for now. Press ALT+Enter to toggle between fullscreen and windowed.

BTW: I Re-created your exact setup on my system and am mirroring your settings to try and figure out what might be causing this. I had a Hi score custom list that was displaying all the GameEx Hi-score games, even though all I have in my C:\Emulators\MAME 0.164 (64bit)\MAME 0.164 Extracted\roms folder is pacman.zip. If I try to open any of those games, it goes to black, mame tries to load and fails, then returns to GameEx like you described. That's because the game is not actually in the roms folder. We want GameEx to build its own list from the available/working roms in your roms directory. When i cleared my custom lists path and updated the list, it now only displays pacman, which opens and plays fine. If GameEx is in window mode it launches Mame in window mode fine with the -window mode mame option. That's why I'm asking you to run GameEx in windowed mode for now. If GameEx is in Fullscreen when you launch mame with the -window option, it just displays a black screen until you hit escape to go back to GameEx or Press ALT+Enter to have Mame go into fullscreen. Anyway, so you understand my thinking.
