[RESOLVED] New Theme Crashing GameEx - WinXP

Recommended Posts

Posted

I am working on a new theme for my cabinet. I am buidling the theme on a Win7 PC at work and then bringing the same files back home to my WinXP arcade cabinet. Today when I moved the files over and chose the new theme Game Ex crashes. I test with other themes so I am guessing it is a change I made today that is causing the issue. I brought over files on Friday and GameEx worked fine...but GameEx works fine on the Win7 PC I create the theme on.

I was missing the gameexlogo file so I moved that from another theme but no dice...any ideas?

I just tested on my Win7 PC again and the theme is still working.

Hi rtkiii

I'm guessing this is due to differences in environments between your two machines. Are theses systems running the same codecs (or equivalent)? Are they running the same version of DirectX? Are they running the same version of .NET? These situations can be tricky to see where the differences are.

Posted

Yeah they should be.

Like I mentioned above I took Files from my Win7 PC on Friday and the theme worked on the XP PC.

But whatever changes I made to the theme yesterday, then moved to XP caused the issue. I'm hoping someone will see what it is in the error report. I did update DirectX on XP, just in case, and that did not help.

If any of the things you mentioned were out of whack, to me GameEx would not have been working this whole time with other themes...right? The XP PC continues to work fine with other themes.

I would go over the list in the log file:

It was detected you experienced a DirectX error.
Please note the following for possible solutions to your problem:
1. Ensure you have the latest version of DirectX installed.
2. Ensure you have the latest Manufacturer provided video card drivers.
NOTE: Windows/Microsoft Update does not contain the latest.
NOTE: Manufacturer normally means ATI, NVidia, or Intel. Not the brand. www.ati.com www.nvidia.com
3. If you do not have a modern video card try the following. 1. Turn off advanced Graphics. 2. Try a lower resolution. 3. Try turning
on and using 16-bit colour
4. Ensure any required video codecs are installed.
5. Try a different theme, or try running the theme at the resolution it was designed for
6. Try the latest version of GameEx. GameEx is updated all the time.
7. If you performed an auto update to this version. Try performing a manual download and install.
Items in red are especially important in this.

I went over some of them last night(DirectX version, 16bit color, lower resolution) but again doesn't it seem more of an issue with the new theme, my PC and GameEx?

GameEx itself works fine with other themes I have used and nothing has changed on the PC except for me adding the theme. So in theory all the things in red are working appropriately with except with this one theme.

Seems odd indeed. Have you done a side-by-side comparison of your gameex.ini files to see if there is any differences between the two machines other than the OS?

No. I would've thought the files I moved from Win7 would be the same on XP but maybe some files did not make it over during the copy...not the 1st time I have seen that. I'll do another dump from Win7 to WinXP and check.

The main difference from Friday to Monday is I added an avi for testing the idea of using a video file at the startup of GameEx. It worked on the Win7 PC but I found it to loop and the file size was just too big, so I removed it(by deleting the files in the theme's folder) and it is gone on Win7 PC and the theme boots fine on Win7 PC.

Is there maybe something I missed where there is some portion of the .ini that is referencing that video file causing a directX, codec error on the XP PC? Even though the video file is not there? I only ask because in the theme editor there did not seem to be a "pretty" way to get rid of the video file. You add through the theme editor options but you cannot remove it in the theme editor that I could see...plus the dang thing worked on XP PC on Friday. all I changed Monday was that video file and changed logo files - which that was just the design...filenames remain the same.

I read your comments about AVI vs MP4. My memory (Which is unreliable) seems to think that you can rename the .mp4 file to an .avi extension and it will work.

Now my memory is arguing that it was flv files, not MP4. :(

It still might be worth a shot.

Yeah that didn;t work :) - I did try browsing all file formats inside of theme editor and it lets me pick my .mp4...but alas it does not play...Boo! :)

Seems like it was a file copy issue. Once I moved any work I did from Tuesday over onto the XP PC(I removed all existing files related to that theme from XP beforehand) it worked like a champ. Well it launched. New issues with the theme itself came up which I will address in my other forum.

SOLVED!
