New GameEx install stalls updating game list

I'm a GameEx noob but been working with many other front ends for years. I thought I would start easy with Mame but with a fresh install I'm getting a "Updating game list... Creating Verify.dat and it stalls at 55%. Left it running overnight and no change. I even deleted everything and reinstalled... Same issue. It stalls at 55% and I have to use the task manager to quit. Not a wonderful experience so far.

Sorry to hear about your MAME issues. When you have a moment would you mind posting you GameEx.ini and your GameEx log? This helps us to cut to the chase as it were, and saves you from answering questions potentially unrelated to your specific issue. I found the guide that says to access the log in Start Menu > Program Files > GameEx > Utilities> Log File. Only thing I see in that folder (Program Files x68 for me) is a theme folder. no Utilities folder. :wacko:

Think I found it: Stallls on Verify.dat (55%). As I said, I let that sucker run for hours and nothing. Have to do an end task to exit.

So out of curiosity have you verified that the version of your ROM set matches your version of MAME? That might cause some problems for -verifysets depending on how big the discrepancy was. I'm also curious to see if the same thing happens if you reduce the number of ROM paths to just one? So what's going on with the two separate ROM paths? Could you get by with consolidating down to one? I'm not sure if that's the issue or not, but it might help with the process of elimination.

do you use catver.ini lists? i am pretty sure it has to do, with the categories. that it stalls at 55% is normal, on my GameEx it takes some minutes to proceed, it depends on horsepower CPU how long this step takes. i had your problem too, the solution for me, was another catver.ini list, that file that devides the games into different categories.

i would try GameEx with a clean MAME. No history.dat, no mameinfo.dat etc. and look how far i would come with that.

Have you tried installing GameEx to your c:\ drive? It is possible your list update is running afoul of system permissions to modify the necessary files. Installing to the root directory (which is recommended) often averts the permissions issues that can cause problems for some users.

Thanks, I'll give that a try if some of the other suggestions don't pan out. My C: drive is a smaller SSD so I like to keep it lean

I'm sure my roms are not perfect but I'm hoping that's not my issue and want to try other options before scouring for an updated set. I cut down my rompath to 1. The other was just an oversight I made during set-up. Thanks for your input!

Finally got it working. Thanks all. It was probably something to do with catver.ini like U-man said. I downloaded a fresh install of Mameui and it starting working.
