I have not used virtual box for a long time. GameEx will run in virtual machines but the Hypervisor needs to support accelerated 3d graphics. VMware workstation does, not sure about VirtualBox.

The reason I said its crazy is because running GameEx in a virtual machine is only remotely useful for people like me developing the software.

According to the info through this link it can be enabled as of version 2.2

The 3D acceleration support built in VirtualBox uses your native machine’s graphics hardware to provide this capability, so if your native graphics driver doesn’t have 3D capability, VirtualBox cannot make use of it.

Based on the article, if your video card doesn't support 3D acceleration and you do not have it configured to take advantage of it via Virtual Box within Linux or your version of Linux doesn't support it, then I am afraid dual boot is going to be your only option.

One thing that hangs people running VMs is not having enough resources (RAM most importantly, but also GPU with enough RAM as well) to run the VM within whatever OS they choose.
