hi

i just downloaded game ex but when i try to run it, i get an error saying directX error. its telling me to lower the resolution and ensure the required drivers are installed. i lowered the resolution but i know nothing about drivers or anything.

im useing an old notebook/laptop with an intel pentium 3 1.13GHz processor and 384Mb RAM if that helps.

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties getting started. When reporting a possible GameEx bug orerror, please ensure you submit a copy of your log.txt and gameex.ini file so we may quickly assist you. Please refer to this link for additional information.

Also, you may want to make sure that your laptop meets the following Minimum System Requirements:

Pentium 3 800Mhz CPU (or equivalent)

DirectX(DirectDraw) Compatible Video card, capable of 16 bit colour at 640X480.
[Your video card does not normally need to be too special unless using
videos or DVD, although older motherboard onboard video is not
recommended]

DirectSound Compatible Sound Card.

256MB Ram

Windows 2000 (SP4), XP (SP2), MCE, Vista, Windows 7

250MB Free hard drive space

Microsoft .net framework 2 service pack 1

Microsoft Direct X 9.0

Windows Media Player 9 or above

Some of these minimums have probably increased, especially regarding the .net framework. Not knowing what kind of laptop, its specs, and OS installed makes it difficult to advise you regarding how or where to look to find the most up to date drivers, so you will have to educate yourself a bit on how to do that.

it does meet the minimum requirements but it is a laptop so the graphics card is probably built in? i dont know. so i really know nothing about the graphics or sound cardsin it.

One thing to try right off. Open the gameex.ini and search for the word AdvancedGFX . You will likely see that the line is reading AdvancedGFX=True . Change True to False then save the changes. Load GameEx and see if there is any difference. Submit a new copy of the log.txt file if any errors. Thanks!

Your log file shows quite a few plugins running. Can you disable all of them? You will need to load the Plugin Manager and uncheck and close. Also, please go into Setup Wizard and select the Default-Default theme. Try launching GameEx again and post a new log file.

If it only has 16MB SDRAM then it is relying heavily on the shared 383MB RAM being reported in the log file (likely it is actually 512MB). This would put it below minimum specs for GameEx to run well if at all. As noted in the minimum requirements, onboard video on the older systems is not recommended. If the RAM was upgraded to 1GB you might have enough juice to run it with some of the lighter weight emulators (MAME for example), but I wouldn't put a lot of money into it to do so.

lol, thats exactly what it is.

so what your saying is that it cant be done on this?

does anyone think that their is another front end out their that would work on this (eg.mala or maximus arcade, hyperspin, mamewah) or is their an outstanding reason why it couldnt possibly be done?

all i plan on running is MAME as i dont like console emulators anyway.

i dont expect you to encourage me to use other sites but if it cant be done here then i have no choice but to move on. the reson i chose here in the begining was because it seemed simple to set us for a noob like myself.

so if you think a different one will work, please direct me.

You could try to increase the amount of installed RAM to give you more leeway. Also, try using Lite mode which will open a smaller version of GameEx without all of the extras. Also, ensure that you have the most up to date Direct X and .net versions installed that your OS will support.

HyperSpin will be too much for your system as will Maximus Arcade most likely. There may be some others that are no longer actively supported that were designed to run on older, legacy systems but no names come to mind at the moment. Perhaps one of the other members can recommend some.

There is always the option of using just MameUI32 or in conjunction with IVPlay which gives more of a basic FE feel to MameUi. Whatever you decide, please let us know what you choose and how it works for you and your system.
