I got gameex on 12 Jul 2012, i not to sure how to find out what ver im on, but it was the last ver before the databases changed i think

Is it even worth updating tho? i really hate the idea of auto artwork downloading, i only use video snaps and boxes (accept mame for the time being) for all my emulators, is it auto downloading or can you stop it all?

I spent hours/weeks setting it up, and worried if i update all my settings/commands might disappear

Whats actually been updated other then artwork downloads and a new database system (the old one works fine...) doesnt really even seem worth doing

Thanks

I have to agree that I was a bit concerned when the auto updating artwork functionality was implemented, but very soon after implementation a flag was added to the configuration settings allowing you to disable auto downloading. You're good to go there!

I highly endorse staying reasonably up to date with the current version of GameEx. First and foremost it becomes harder and harder to support legacy versions of GameEx from a troubleshooting perspective. If you happen to discover some sort of bug in a legacy version of GameEx who's to say that bug wasn't corrected in a later version? From that perspective it's not all that productive to spend a lot of time trying to troubleshoot problems in legacy versions, as there's only so much we can do.

But even more importantly, you'd be missing out on a ton of cool new functionality. I'm still riding high on the integrated support of Steam in GameEx. That's something that no other frontend can boast. Seriously, those folks that are clinging to older versions of GameEx are missing out.

If you want support I suggest you stay current. We can't help much with problems on older builds should you have any.

Your settings will be fine.

It's always good to be upto date. there are many bug fixes and improvement like, integrated support of Steam in GameEx (just this new feature is worth upgrading alone)

plus it will help if you come across a problem or you need help, as many of use are always up to date which you stand a better chance of getting your problem fix if you are too.

First line of your log.txt file (you know, the one we ALWAYS ask for when you report an issue) tells you what version you have. Also, you can see this in Add/Remove Programs (XP) or Programs & Features (Vista/7).

Yes. FIrst off, if you come to us with an issue and we see in the log file that you provide that you are on an older version, the first thing we will ask before troubleshooting an issue with you is for you to update to the latest. There may be code changes that addresses your issue.

i only use video snaps and boxes (accept mame for the time being) for all my emulators, is it auto downloading or can you stop it all?

This was fixed a few versions ago. There is an option via Setup Wizard to enable/disable auto downloading. If you cannot find it, update to the latest version (See? The benefits of keeping up to date are manifesting already! :) )

I spent hours/weeks setting it up, and worried if i update all my settings/commands might disappear

Your settings will not disappear with regular updates. We recommend keeping your vital files backed up as a general "best practice" for anything PC related.

Bottom line: It is only worth what you put into it. Whether it be this forum, your programs, whatever. Things won't automagically fix themselves or improve/add functionality without effort.
