artwork wrong resoluton?

i am using a arcade-vga card and a arcade monitor, everything looks great and at the correct display res. but when i add the artwork folder and run space invaders or a game like 1941 the display is the wrong res and unplayable? ive looked at every setting i can find. am i missing something somewhere?
