You are probably right Draco, but after hours of installing, reboots, frozen screens, crash reports to windows, reboots, uninstall, swear words and no sign of improvement seeing Evolution work without these issues was a massive relief. Thanks again for the tips and trying to help.

Update: Uninstalled GameEx, GameEx Arcade and GameEx Evolution. Deleted the folders that remained. Rebooted. Installed GameEx Arcade. Rebooted. Froze on the please wait screen again. Mumbled some profanities. Uninstalled GameEx Arcade. Rebooted. Installed GameEx Evolution. Ran set up. Took me a while to get the folders to work properly and be pointed at mame64.exe. Ran GameEx Evolution and was able to play a game. This can be marked Resolved through giving up. Thanks for trying to help.

Tonight I will uninstall all GameEx, GameEx Arcade and GameEx Evolution and start fresh with just GameEx Arcade (as I only plan on having mame on there and Evolution throws up java errors in the setup wizard). Hopefully a fresh install will clear out any bugs. Will report back in about 10 hours. Cheers -cdbrown

Ok downloaded the bak.mp4, made sure it had the correct name and placed into the default - default/media folder. Changed the config back to Default - Default and started up Arcade. Back to being stuck on the please wait screen, the background arcade sounds play after a bit, in fact they continue to play for about a minute after I ESC from the program. log.txt

1. renamed bak.mp4 to bak.old and restarted (I can run bak.mp4 in a media player no problems). GEArcade gets past the please wait screen and loads a list of genres. However as I scroll through one or two it freezes and windows asks whether to close or wait. As i was scrolling (list is on the right side) and there weren't any icons showing on the left side. I had to rename hideos.exe as that is a pain. 2. there is no bak.avi in the MEDIA Folder 3. I installed the Draconus theme and changed the config to Draconus as per instructions in the download page I got this error message06:43:53.76 22-Oct-18: Opening Configuration File 06:43:53.79 22-Oct-18: GameEx Arcade Edition x64: Version 15.52: Starting Log 06:43:53.93 22-Oct-18: Windows 10 Home 64-bit 06:43:53.93 22-Oct-18: Aero running 06:43:53.95 22-Oct-18: Initializing Vista/Windows 7 volume control 06:43:53.96 22-Oct-18: Getting CPU and RAM info 06:43:53.96 22-Oct-18: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz, 8157MB 06:43:53.96 22-Oct-18: 3.09Ghz - 4 Cores or CPU's 06:43:53.98 22-Oct-18: Running Randomize() 06:43:54.14 22-Oct-18: Loading PlugIns 06:43:54.22 22-Oct-18: Checking for applications to Launch On Startup 06:43:54.22 22-Oct-18: Setting default net connection limit to 15 06:43:54.32 22-Oct-18: Running Misc startup tasks 06:43:54.32 22-Oct-18: Setting Menu types 06:43:54.33 22-Oct-18: Getting Configuration Values 06:43:54.33 22-Oct-18: --**-- 06:43:54.35 22-Oct-18: Error: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. 06:43:54.41 22-Oct-18: at GameEx.GameEx.MainForm.a(Boolean A_0, String A_1, Boolean A_2) 06:43:54.41 22-Oct-18: at GameEx.GameEx.MainForm..ctor() 06:43:54.43 22-Oct-18: Disposing Plugins 06:43:54.43 22-Oct-18: GameEx is exiting with errors 06:43:54.44 22-Oct-18: Deleting search cache 06:43:54.44 22-Oct-18: ERRORS DETECTED: EXITING 06:43:56.89 22-Oct-18: Bye I will reboot and see if that helps log.txt

So I've just recently updated to the latest version of GameEx Arcade (and the other flavours as well). Gone through the setup for mame My mame is in E:\MAME and it's mame64.exe version 0.202. Roms and CHDs in E:\MAME\Roms Setup goes through and verifies everything and then I run GameEx Arcade as Administrator and it begins some arcade audio and shows the start up screen saying GameEx please wait while loading.... And this loading screen will be there and show no signs of going away. Left it for over 30 minutes to see if was doing some update or something but still no change. ESC out of it and the audio will continue for a bit before finally closing. Any ideas? What have I done wrong? Also I have the HideOS disabled yet the program to hide the OS still runs. Just went out for a coffee at a little arcade themed coffee shop. Noticed a bartop 2 player machine in the corner. Closer inspection it's running GameEx. Nice to see it out and about. First time I've seen GameEx other than on my cab. Such a clean interface which smoothly scrolled between games and running demos. Need to fire up my machine again, update it and play some games. Cheers -cdbrown

I've got a reasonable machine in a dedicated cab so want mame and GE to run at highest settings. I'll try and get all the mame configs sorted within mame itself and just let GE run mame and rom as that seems to work best. I'll probably just stick with GE as well for the customisation options available.
-
Basically when I launched a known working game from GE it would say to wait while it loaded, screen would go black the arcade ambient sounds would then stop but then GE would crash and return to desktop. Or it just wouldn't take focus back after mame not loading, either way the GE wasn't running as an application anymore. Now that the mame options aren't in GE setup this crashing issue has stopped.
-
So I've removed those mame options and edited the mame.ini file in the mame folder and it works. Even enabled cpwizard (rather than the GE panel) and that works as well. Thanks RedDog. I did test running the games using cmd.exe and the command as per the log file and it worked through that so not sure why GE is having troubles with the extra options. But that issue is sorted. Any idea how to get my start/task bar to come back after crashing out of GE? Do I need to do a restart to get it to come back or is there a command I can use - I can bring up the start menu using the windows key on keyboard, but the bar doesn't stay there. Cheers -cdbrown
-
I initially thought it was CPWizard and the order things were loading, but I've disabled it and tried again and it just returns back to GE each time, no sign of any mame loading screens at all. So it's not CPWiz doing the damage. I must have a setting wrong somewhere as both GE and GE Arcade have the same problem
-
So have tried both GE and GE Arcade and get somewhat similar results. Have everything set up including having CPWizard to show my CP and the required buttons. I pick a game such as 1942 and it will then lauch CPWizard and after about 2 minutes it will return to GE Arcade, or just crash out to desktop if running GE (GE task is still running in background so have to kill it in task manager). Looking in the logs both applications try to run mame before cpwizard From the latest GE effort From GE Arcade Have tried with CPWizard disabled to see if it was the problem and it tries to load mame but then returns back to GE. Any ideas. Running mame0.190, have latest roms, have checked they work using the mame64.exe log.txt GameEx.ini

May help - but have you tried to set the following in the screen shot above? X Resolution 1920 Y Resolution 1080
-
I think the issue is that GE is still loading up HideOs even though Hide Desktop is set to NO. @RedDog did renaming HideOs.exe to something else have any detrimental effect considering GE still wants to load it?
-
So I've begun using GE Arcade rather than GE (for the time being) and have some questions: Do I need to enable the Slikstic and IPAC option in the setup wizard as I'm using an IPAC-4? I've enable the CPWizard in the setup wizard but when I go into a game it doesn't display the panel image like it did in GE. It also isn't showing up in the in-game options list. CPWizard is sitting in my task bar as running - not sure if this is correct? I've setup my panel properly in CPWiz and made it the default panel and the CPWiz testing showed it was all working. I'm trying to use the panel buttons for controlling GE Arcade and for the most part it works - joystick moves the lists up and down, Player 1 start (Keyboard_1) works as the enter button (although I didn't set it) however I'm not sure which button goes back a menu? Pressing the ESC button on keyboard closes GE Arcade, so in the setup wizard I selected my Player 1 coin (Keyboard_5) as the back button. That worked fine in GE Arcade, so able to use joystick to navigate, start to select, coin to go back, however when I go into a game and press coin, the game quits and goes back to GE Arcade so clearly GE Arcade is still "monitoring" the button presses. I don't want to have a dedicated to go back and would like to use the buttons I have. Any way to have GE Arcade not still have control even though I'm in a game? Cheers -cdbrown

Time for a new PC - Could use a second pair of eyes (or three)
cdbrown replied to RedDog's topic in Gamer Rigs
I was looking at AIO liquid cooling as well for my cab pc, but all the reviews point to having a decent CPU cooler and case fans will provide better cooling, plus plenty of negatives on the noise the static fans make trying to push air through the radiator. So i swapped out the intel stock cpu cooler for a Noctua NH-L12 and put in some Corsair AF140 Quiet case fans (replacing some coolermaster ones) and now my CPU temp is 43C at 100% (folding@home) instead of near 80C and it's actually quieter even without any control of the case fan speeds. Just make sure you get enough case fans for intake and exhaust. Can't help with the rest as I'm still on the old i5-2400 and HD4550 -
I just tried GameEx (MAME only) which loaded up the GameEx Ultra theme, however when I went to access the mame game list it crashed and burned. But this time it wouldn't crash out back to windows, just stayed black with some arcade background sounds playing. Alt-tab and clicking on the X wouldn't close it, started task manager to try and kill the process but couldn't get it to focus on the task manager (I could see it in the alt-tab list of progs). Ended up having to sign out of windows account to get it cleared. When it did crash a pop up asked if i wanted to debug, but then said I didn't have the JIT something to do the debug. Urgh. Time to download GameEx Arcade
-
So the themes I downloaded through the setup wizard will work with normal GameEx as that's the one I'm playing around? To be honest when I was looking at the theme list I just picked some that I liked the name of and had 1920x1080 resolution. Any idea on why GameEx would crash when picking the other theme (that I had previously downloaded through the setup wizard)? Edit - I should probably be playing around with GameEx Arcade considering it's on my MAME machine and I'm unlikely to use the HTPC component.
-
That is what I'm trying to do and wasn't aware the themes didn't apply to normal GameEx. So normal GameEx doesn't do themes at all? Any reason there is the option to use the themes from the menus within normal GameEx?

Was able to play a little more with GameEx last night and decided to try out one of the themes rather than the default. Picked GameEx Arcade Draconus Theme in the setup program, downloaded the theme and enabled it on the following page. Started up GameEx and it stuck with the default, exited, checked the setup program and it was still set to the Draconus Theme. Back into GameEx and still default theme. Decided to try out the theme picker inside Gameex and that's where it hung for a while. Gave up and tried again this morning, again it was set to draconus, but started up in default, went into the theme selector and chose Draconus from there, but it just wouldn't load the theme, tried out a different theme (unfortunately can't remember the name exactly but something like Retro Arcade which is mainly a yellow background) which did load but then crashed out. Attached the various files I've seen being asked to help the Theme (1).ini is the one for Draconus. As a side question - when doing the manual download and install of GameEx, is it normal for the installer to overwrite the gameex.ini files? or to change some settings to default? A lot of my settings were in place but all the mame paths had reverted to default, so had to go through and set them all again, go into gameex and get it to generate the lists. Any tips or advice? No MAME games found after upgrade and update list
cdbrown replied to StreetSamurai's topic in General
I'd be going through the setup guide to ensure all the paths are correct - as tthurman said 0.137 is a long time ago and also many GameEx versions ago so the settings (and amount of settings) in all likelihood have probably changed. -
Cheers guys. Still want to put in a marquee and screen bezel to hide everything. Just not sure what to use. Any tips bearing in mind I'm in Perth, west Aus and we aren't exactly spoiled for choice Sent from my Redmi Note 3 using Tapatalk

From the GameEx.ini MAMEPath=C:\Emulation\Emulators\MAME\ Shouldn't it be MAMEPath=C:\Emulation\Emulators\MAME without the \ at the end? This is how the paths for other items are written - ROMPath=C:\Emulation\ROMs\MAME AdvanceMAMEPATH=C:\Emulators\AdvanceMAME
