[RESOLVED] Game EX won't launch, what am I doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Here are the last few lines of the error message I get when trying to launch GEX.

I have watched online videos and thought I got the simplicity of the set-up process. It would appear I was wrong!!!

Can anyone shed light onto what I seem to be getting wrong?

Many thanks

Jon

Hi and thanks for your reply.

It would appear that it is something to do with video one way or the other.

I'm using a trident blade card that I got years ago as I heard it was good with arcade monitors (which is what this setup will be used for). I have tried to find and installed what I believe to be the latest drivers and also DirectX says that it is up to date.

I'm trying to play around with resolutions in the advance configuration but am thinking about trying another card to to see if this is the problem.

I will include the latest error log to see if this helps you diagnose and help with my problem.

Many thanks in advance.....

Hi Jon - if you have another compatible GPU to install in place of the Trident I would recommend that. While I have not worked with one in years, I recall having quite a few problems with drivers and BSOD issues related to them when working on other people's PCs. If you have access to an ATI or nVidia card and are willing to give it a go, let me know how things turn out.

Hey Draco and thanks for your reply

I have tried the PC with an old Matrox card and that has solved the launch issue.

Although I set up GEX with the wizard and pointed ROMS and such to the default locations its only coming up with the demo's of Donkey Kong and Pac Man??!?!

I need to have another look at that but what I'm asking now is the best way to set GEX up with a view to using the version 1 of Ultimarcs Arcade VGA on a Jamma cab. The cab is already set up and using mamewah FE but this PC is a hardware upgrade that I'm wanting GEX to run with multiple emulators. I guess what I'm asking is, is there any documentation some where that talks you through setting GEX up for use with an arcade cab. Also on the arcade VGA settings in the advance set up does this also include support for the afore mentioned version 1?

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I'm also guessing at this point that the Blade 64 card is useless with GEX?

Many MANY thanks

Jon

Jon - I am glad you got this up and running with the other GPU. I am not sure if it is a deal breaker for you with the Blade card or not, but I do know that whenever working on PCs for friends that were having problems with various apps and had the Trident Blade video cards installed, installing another card resolved the issues. I am not sure if it is a conflict with the hardware itself or just poorly written device drivers or both, just that they have caused problems.

You have several issues going on here so we probably need to start with the basics. I am going to point you to How To Ask For Help so you can see what kind of info we will need to assist you in resolving your issues. We will need copies of your gameex.ini and log.txt files to start. If you are seeing the demos, then likely the issue is in the paths and these files will help us to determine what needs to be changed.

I will probably need help from other mods/users regarding your questions for the Ultimarc VGA and Jamma cab specifics but I think it beneficial to get you started with a sound GameEx foundation first.

Hi and thanks again for all your time and help

I will probably just ditch the Blade card as I bought it years ago and the information from then probably isn't as relative now. My main goal now is to get the new MB and hardware into my existing cab and install the version one VGA card as I'm sure there are settings and previsions in the GEX set up to accommodate such a configuration.

Do you think its a good idea to start from scratch as far as the GEX initial set up is concerned? For example I was thinking of downloading each emulator I wanted through the set up process and then surely the paths can't be wrong. Is this a good way to go?

Also my main concern (without researching such issues as yet) is the transition of the system to using arcade controls rather than mouse or keyboard. I'm assuming this shouldn't be a problem as FE such as mamewah handle this easily.

So thanks again and I shall crack on with the new install.

Sorry for the late response. I think it sound to let GEX download and install as you suggested. You will need to enter each emulator's option to setup the paths as GEX will not do that for you. Good luck and I will mark this issue as resolved. Keep us posted and feel free to ask if you need further help!
