BEST Guide for playing FLV files in Windows Media Player (and GameEx)

All,

I know a few of us have been having issues with GameEx playing FLV files playing without video (or not playing at all) due to Windows Media Player. I was about to give up earlier today when I stumbled upon this guide:

Afterdawn Guides: How to play FLV files

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_flv_files.cfm

The final step in the guide turned out to be the missing piece of the puzzle. While 3rd party players such as Media Player CLASSIC or VLC Player only require a correctly configured Codec Pack such as FFDSHOW to play FLV files, WMP additionally requires a FLV Splitter.

I downloaded and ran the recommended program (Gabest Flash Video Splitter v1.0.0.4) and... success! :D The Gabest software is listed for XP, but I am on 32bit Windows 7 and it worked without issue.

Gabest Flash Video Splitter v1.0.0.4:

I hope that helps. Post a reply if you try this with 64bit Win 7. I would be curious to hear if it works.

And with that issue solved, it is beer time.

Regards,

Brendan

For what it's worth, all of my video files that I use in GameEx are .FLV format, and whilst they didn't play at first (in WMP or anything else), I downloaded Shark007's Codec pack and everything worked fine.

Shark007 is the suggested codec pack for GameEx. But thanks for the share.

Okay well that is even easier. I admit I didn't try Shark007, due to (what I perceived to be) posts indicating that it didn't fix the issues for all users.

This issue aside, do you think there are other benefits to Shark007 over FFDShow (tryouts)? I was under the impression FFD was considered to be the "best" of the bunch.

Shark007 includes both Gabest and FFDShow. This is a good guide if your stumbling block is getting FLVs to play and want to keep your installations down to a bare minimum. Much appreciated.

Don't be deterred because a few had some issues. As it turned out, it wasn't always the codecs. Shark007 is one of the most comprehensive and complete that I have found, regularly updated , and compatibility with XP and versions for both 32-bit/64-bit flavors of Vista and 7,

Easier if it proved to work. LOL. But as you mentioned still had problems. It was all a matter to do with settings and also could have been their hardware. Hard to say. I personally was never able to test as I didn't have FLV video snaps. Thanks again for your post and hope our users are able to benefit from them. :)
