[RESOLVED] GameEx crashes with "Index was outside the bounds of the array"

Greetings.

First off, I gotta say that I love GameEx! I just got my arcade running alst week and chose GX as my front end and even paid for the full version day one!

So now for my issue.....

Everything was working well until last nite until, for no reason what so ever, entering any menu which displays a database list (favorites, emu list, MAME games, etc) causes GameEx to crash.

There was nothing out of the ordinary that started this. We played a few games, walked away, attract screen kicked in, woke it up, chose another game and BAM!

It hasn't worked ever since.

I have tried the following things to try to resolve this:

1) delete .cache files - same

2) renamed data.mdb and reinstalled - same

3) renamed old install directory, fresh install of GameEx - it allowed a one time update to the MAME game list, but when trying to enter a menu to see the results it crashed the same way

4) revisited Windows update and got everything, including all .NET fixes and patches - same on both old and fresh install

5) downloaded new installer via GameEx web site and installed that twice... once as fresh install and once over the top of original install and each yielded the same results as above

Each time it crashes, the debug log (error list, whatever you guys call it), is the same and is attached. The main error I see is "Index was outside the bounds of the array" and each time it is accompanied by a Windows Event in Applications for .NET 2.0 Runtime, Event ID 5000. It is quite predictable.

I read through the forums and followed suggestions which lead me to my steps laid out above.

I Googled the .NET Runtime error directly and most results seem to elude to the backend being the cause with no real hotfixes or tricks around it from my end. One suggestions was to enable legacyUnhandledExceptionPolicy in aspnet.config but that didn't seem likely but for kicks and giggles I tried that too to no avail.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I really want this running!!!

I finally got to build an arcade system last week and its killing me that it died and I have no way back already. I tried other FE's and they work (but stink compared to GameEx IMO) so I want to stick with it.

I really would rather not wipe my Windows install if possible, but I fear it is going that direction.

PC SPECS:

Windows XP SP3 running native on Core2 Duo 2.0 with 2GB RAM

The PC is dedicated to the arcade and sees no action otherwise.

All Windows Updates applied

Thanks for taking the time to read over this.

I hope someone can be of assistance.

Uh oh... I wouldn't worry too much as Tom is usually very quick to fix things, but could you please post your log anyway?

d'oH!

I chose the files to attach but didn't hit the attach button! Sorry about that....

Both files now attached to the original post.

Thanks for pointing that out!

A quick question and this may have absolutely nothing to do with what is causing your sytem to error,. Do you have your emulators and ROMs installed on a mapped network drive? If so, any problems connecting to it?

Draco... At first I did, but that was a few days ago and I stopped since my server takes a massive load with other things I do so I wanted local, independent storage and once this is running, I plan on pulling it off the network altogether so moving them locally was necessary.

I installed all roms, emulators and goodies on a removable USB drive mounted as Z:\ (my best external I have) and installed GameEX to my local C:\ drive. It doesn't seem to lag and is always ready when I click on it. I do have power settings putting all drives asleep after 10 minutes of inactivity, but this happens when the drive is up and online, not in a standy state.

Again, it worked flawlessly for three solid and LONG days and then just decided to call it quits.

Short of an OS reinstall from scratch, I have tried everything I can think of. I am in the process of a 5th re-install (yeah, I really keep pushing that car up the hill) and configuring slowly, one item at a time hoping I will see a triggering cause, but nothing so far.

With that being said, it seems better as I can see the full MAME list once in a while, but still crashes like crazy. Sometimes I can play a game, but when I back out, crash again. Always with the same error. I guess it doesn't like me. :/

The reason I ask is that the log was showing multiple instances of paths not found on the z:\ drive. Again, not sure if that is part of the issue, just an observation.

I believe this error is caused by an incorrect Emulator Group setup. Try disabling your emulator groups.

Also, please post you gameex.ini then hopefully I can duplicate the issue and fix here.

If that still does not help try the attached gameex.exe. Get it to crash and post the log.

Thanks.

Greetings again.

I do not use emulator groups (yet) and I confirmed all were disabled. All were set to NO except #5 which was blank (not yes nor no).

I tried both with that group set to nothing and then set it to NO.

Both values yielded the same result.

Attached is the last log file using the gameex.exe you attached as well as my gameex.ini file (I added .txt extension to allow upload on the forum [disallowed file type .ini]).

Thanks in advance!

I've run into the same issue.

Yesterday, I updated to the latest release of GameEx.

Since then I get the "Index was outside the bounds of the array." error everytime I try to select Mame list.

If wanted, I can also post my error file and ini file.

Please post. You may want to zip them as the .ini file may reject due to the file type.

This is fixed in 11.48. Now available.

Thanks for that!

I haven't looked and for some reason the email replies to the thread don't seem to send all the time so I just saw this.

I'll give it a shot and post back!!!

Thanks again!

psybertech and DarkKniyt - Have you upgraded your GameEx installation to the 11.48 which addresses the error you encountered? Please let us know if this resolved the issue or if we can be of further help regarding.
