Problem with Favorites - update hung & cab won't boot

Hope someone can help with this.

I've just been laboriously going through numerous roms to check they work then adding them to favorites as I find each working one.

I already had some in there but not many. Probably added another dozen or so just now.

When I then went to go into the favorites games menu option to see/play the ones I'd added, I got a dialog about doing an update and pretty much had to as the other controls stopped responding apart from the enter key.

So I did it, and it had a progress bar that reached 25% then hung. I left it half an hour and it still hadn't changed. I couldnt bring up task manager, couldn't alt/tab to desktop etc so I had no choice but to reboot the pc.

Now, when it starts, it seems to boot windows, but never shows the desktop, it just gives me a blank (black) screen which is pretty worrying after all the time I've spent getting all this working quite well. :(

Can anyone advise what might be wrong and what I need to do? My first inclination since it's failed to boot properly twice in a row is to try safe mode then remove Gamex from the startup list, but I wondered if anyone else has had similar problems with updating their favorite roms list? I know I tried it a week or so back and it also hung at 25% but I managed to get round it somehow.

Nothing is working to resolve this at the moment though....

Thanks

Jim

Update - I solved the immediate problem with a reboot in safe mode and taking gamex out of the startup folder. Got a normal boot that way.

Then I booted Gamex and it's ok, but every time I go to the favorites menu item, it tries to force me to do an update and if I accept, it hangs at 25%.

So I'm not sure what to do to resolve this.

I would suspect this:

22:24:43.5 19/10/2010: MAME Path is: C:\Emulators\Mame32

22:24:43.5 19/10/2010: Cannot Find MAME Path: MAME Disabled

Jackpot!

Yes indeed, when I installed Gamex it has downloaded Mame rather than Mame32 so all references to it in the ini file (after a bit of rummaging to find the file using this path) were incorrect.

Have done a find/replace and it's perfect now.

Appreciate the assistance. :)

You could use either the Setup Wizard, or the Advanced Configuration program to set up GameEx, no need to edit the ini file by hand.

I'm not used to these fancy gui options to be honest, although I really like them a lot! :)

I've had to reinstall and do a new OS install to try and resolve an infuriating Standby fault with the PC (which still isn't solved - PC turns off on S3 standby but the PSU stays running. Tried loads of things in vain to fix this!).

The upshot of this is that since I've reinstalled XP and Gamex and the zillions of other things associated like .net and directx and drivers software etc, I have a couple of problems in gamex that are driving me nuts now!

As usual they'll be simple things I'm sure, but I've spent ages searching through the setup app and the configuration app etc in vain.

First and by far the most annoying is a problem associated with Down direction on my P2 joystick. When I'm playing any game through Gamex (I've tried Mame and Zsnes), moving the P2 stick down while in game seems to invoke some sort of pause function, or maybe a 'Back' button.

When I move the stick down, the game goes off screen but can be heard still running, and Gamex reappears with a menu screen. Resume or Resume Game is the top option on this list and selecting that goes back into the game. Obviously this is no good as it means I can't have any 2P games until I find what is causing this.

I went through both Mame and Zsnes menus and input setup screens but found nothing that would cause this.

I'm sure it must be a Gamex setup thing because of the fact it happens on both emulators that I have tried.

Down direction on the P2 Joystick corresponds with zero (0) on the keyboard, which in the scan file is shown as 11, but I just can't find where this is being used.

I would be REALLY happy if someone could help resolve this issue as it's driving me mad!

Thanks guys

Jim

For the first issue, have you tried disabling Power Management in the BIOS and the OS? For the 2nd issue, have you tested your P2 Joystick with MAME and ZSNES outside of GameEx to 100% confirm the issue is in GameEx and not the joystick? Also, you did not mention if you are using any mapping software (ex: Joy-To-Key, Xpadder, Logitech Profiler, etc.).

Can you elaborate a little on what you mean by power management in the OS please mate? I've tried variations in 'Power Options' via control panel, and I've had a lot of experience of that in the past. The options in there are pretty limited so I'm certain it's set up correctly there.

In the Bios I have got it set to ACPI, which is the only way you can make S3 (suspend to ram) available as far as I know.

It is actually making the PC itself go into standby mode, but the PSU should also shut down with the exception of a small bit of power going in so it can keep the content of the memory intact and to monitor the power button for waking up again. What's happening though is the PSU is staying on fully, with fans running and power going through molex plugs to peripheral stuff like lights and drives etc. Can't leave it on like that.

I've read of this with other people and some had results using a file called dumppo.exe but it has not helped for me.

Am beginning to wonder if it's a fault with the mobo, or the power supply itself, so I may swap in another psu when I have time and see if it cures it. Baffling though!

Re' the joystick problem, yes, I've tried them outside gamex and they work fine. Just played SF2 turbo just now and P2 was fine crouching etc. Try it via gamex though and it interrupts the game with this menu screen with 'resume game' on it.

I'm not using any key mapping apps that I'm aware of and it's a fresh install of windows from about 24 hours ago!

Has to be something simple but as I say I've searched through a lot of ini & config files for terms like 'back' & 'pause' & 'menu' and I just can't find it. :(

What OS are you using? I was refering to the ACPI settngs in Control Panel. You may want to try swapping the PSU first (least costly). What mobo/chipset? I have heard of some having issues with Asus / AMD combinations in the past (had a devil of a time with my last machine getting the ACPI working right, then an XP update broke it and could never get it right again.

According to the OP's log, the OP is running the following:

22:24:43.1 19/10/2010: Operating System Name: Windows XP

d'Oh! Reading is fundamental, eh? :P

Also noticed running AMD Athlon XP 2600+ CPU as well - was the same chip as my old PC that was giving me the ACPI issues. The RAM is showng as 511MB.

Cret - are you using onbaord video? Not that it should matter with regards to ACPI, but I know that it is generally not recommended for GameEx as optimal,

Hi guys -I was using amd but switched to a P4 so I can run saturn emulator etc. Asus board P4i65g and P4 3ghz 1mb 800fsb.

I've got an AGP 512mb ddr2 card of some description.....

My guess would be:

Input Settings (2) > In Game Key

Oops - sorry I missed this one earlier when I replied.

Thanks - will check that out once I find it. That probably sounds stupid but as I've got several different windows menus relating to gamex and its settings I'm not fully au fait with what is where.

There are two programs to use for setting up emulators and applications in GameEx - Advanced configuration, and Setup Wizard. They can both be found in the Start Menu > GameEx>Configuration folder.

If you use the Setup Wizard, click on 'Next' select 'Custom' Click 'Next' and then input settings. The Setup Wizard also has a search feature that can be handy to find things. If you use 'Search', instead of 'Custom' and search for 'In Game Key' it will suggest 'Input Settings' as your only option.

If you are using the Advanced Configuration program, then you just have to look for 'Input Settings', click on it, then click 'Next', and that will take you to page 2, where you will find the setting for 'In Game Key'. Hence my suggestion "Input Settings (2) > In Game Key"

Posted

Perfectly described thankyou.

Checked it and it is set to 48. Apparently that's 'B', but as I mentioned in the scans file the zero (normal not numpad zero) is shown as being 11, so it kinda looks like that's not it. I'd have really loved for you to be right though!

Appreciate the suggestion all the same.

Input Settings > Custom Keyboard Controls

If that is set to Yes, then 'B' is the back button. You can verify that by clicking on 'Edit'

Posted

Nah, that's set to 'No'.

Not sure if I actually have a working back button at the moment as I tend to use Esc for most things. It's not ideal obviously!

Well, I've tried for a couple of nights to build a new PC for the cabinet in order to sort this out (ie the S3 problem and the P2 Joystick thing). No luck - the two half decent socket 478 boards I have spare arent playing ball, one has no video output after trying all sorts of stuff (different cards, different memory, clearing cmos etc), the other gets part way through an XP install and then blue screens on me. Never before in 20 odd years of computers experience have I had this much grief trying to sort a couple of simple issues (except maybe when I was using Windows ME!! :)).

I removed all traces of gamex tonight from my non S3ing setup tonight, downloaded it again and decided to install from scratch. And guess what, this bloody P2 joy down problem is still there, yet I know I've had at least two times when I installed it when this hasn't happened. I just can't find the fault and it's driving me crazy. My best mate is coming round on Saturday for a drinking and arcade session before his wedding in 2 weeks, and I won't be able to play him because of this. :(

If anyone has ideas on this Gamex menu that's being activated then now would really be a great time to suggest it.

Appreciate all the suggestions so far anyway. Thanks guys!

Posted

I have been hating to ask this, but are you sure that P2 joy down is sending the '0' key?

Is there any way that you can change the key that is sent? How is it connected to your computer? Ipac?

Posted

Don't worry about asking me things like that - I'd rather someone ask me something than it potentially get overlooked! :)

I'm pretty sure I did actually check that by opening a text file and using the joystick to add some zeros but in all honesty I might not have actually ended up doing it after all, having spent so long trying different things to fix it.

Will double check tonight. From what I can recall it did show a zero in the zsnes setup/input screen so I'm pretty sure it is doing what it should.

I know it's a separate point really, but even if it wasn't outputting a zero it's kind of beside the point as it would be avoiding the cause of the problem, ie what exactly is it that it's triggering? Don't take that the wrong way though, I'm just thinking logically rather than being 'funny'!!!

I can't change the keymapping as I use this controller called a PC Arcade Controller II as sold on ebay, which is an all in one thing with wiring harness that connects to keyboard PS2 port.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PC-Arcade-Controller-MK-2-MAME-Cab-/230542328619?pt=UK_Video_Games_Coin_Operated_MJ&hash=item35ad64c32b

I have previously asked the guy that makes them about the keymapping and he says it can't be changed due to issues with ghosting etc I think.

I was going to email Tom Speirs and ask him if he knew of a setting that could cause this since I'm certain it is indeed a setup issue rather than a bug. The contact page says not to though so I'm stuffed it seems.

I can understand that since I run a busy forum myself and have to spend a lot of my free time answering user questions that shouldn't be sent to me, eg it's a car forum and instead of questions about the forum itself I get questions about whether a particular part will fit a particular car etc (and I'd hate to be guilty of daft questions like that myself!).

Bit upsetting though after I bought the software key and now it looks like I just basically can't use Gamex without finding out the issue here.

Am at my wit's end after spending hours looking through setup files/menus, and reinstalling etc. :(

Appreciate the suggestions so far on this thread anyway.
