GameEX "crashes" upon playing video / returning from video

Tom - I have been tinkering with using AVI files in place of a logo or background and have encountered a few crashes. The AVI does not display (a black box appears instead). It is happening intermittently and not generating an error log as such. The AVI files will run with other apps with no problems.

Followign is the error message generated by Windows:

Description:

Stopped working

Problem signature:

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Name: GameEx.exe

Application Version: 1.0.0.0

I am running Win 7 Pro - 64-bit with latest updates on a Quad Core with 8 GB RAM and nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB with latest drivers. GameEx version is 11.07.

Let me know if I can provide you with anything else that may be of help.

cdgvid.ax is a DirectShow filter so it may well be a bug in the codec.

When it crashes is it always in cdgvid.ax? Is this crash when playing a "cdg" karaoke file? Do you have the DirectX Karaoke plugin installed?

Unfortunately this software has not been updated in a long time and may be a bug. If it's not the DirectX Karaoke plugin you may want to try updating to the latest codec pack you're using (we recommend the Vista Codec Pack).

I wish I could duplicate the issue. Its deffinitly only affecting a handful. Its not windows XP (as I just installed it and tested it). Its not NVIDIA cards in general either. It also does not appear to be a GameEx configuration issue either.

Anyone affected - Please provide full details of your software and harware. Including windows service pack, and video card. Are you using windows update and is your system completely up to date?

I'm using Windows XP (fresh install a couple of weeks back because I was having a different problem). It's SP3. I have auto updates on. I checked and all critical updates were installed and I even installed the optional software as well. I'm using an old PCI video card (Geforece4 MX 440) because my AGP slot does not seem to support direct3D. Video drivers are 93.71 (most recent). I use Haali Media Splitter and FFDShow (Ver 3476) to decode videos. They play along with DVDs in WMP. I have a short video that plays at startup without any crashes. I played the same video from within GameEx and it crashed. I've included my GameEx.ini and I am using the default - media center theme. Let me know if I can provide anything else.

Is the problem still present in the new version I released today?

Thanks.

Tom.

Yes I am still getting the same result after I updated to 11.08. I also installed a fresh version of GameEx on another hard drive (same computer) and got the same result. Additionally, I installed it on a different machine and video worked. I'm pretty sure I'm using default - media center theme but it looked slightly different on each install. Anything else I can try?

Thanks again for all your help,

Eric

Still crashing for me too Tom. However, I think we can put the playing video part of this crash to bed..it's almost certainly a 'changing resolutions' or 'going from window to window' type of thing. I get a crash when I alt tab from full screen as well.

Just wanted to let you all know, this is still on my list. I think the only solution is going to be to move from Managed DirectX to SlimDX.

Also consider going OpenGL using the Tao Framework. I use it for an editor I wrote for the game we're developing and it's very easy to use.

Thanks for the update. I'm having this problem on my dedicated arcade machine so videos are not its primary function. Let me know if I can test something or other way to help.
