Hello,

I am just extending my Mame Installation guide with a new section : Important files, and I think I do not have all files in place. Backround : If You want to reinstall the whole system, which files are very important so that You must not do again the whole work...What I have at the moment is :

1. Gameex.ini for the most cofiguration of Gameex

2. custominput.ini for custom controls

I am searching for the file, where the MAME ROM list is saved. As You know when You first start GameEx, You must update the list and that can take very long...so to shortcut this process, I just would like to know the file where its saved and replay this file in the correct location, So whats the name of the file and where must I save it ?

Another thing what takes very long is taging Your music : when You start Gameex for the first time, he will look for all Your music, so I also want to shortcut this process...which file and where is it stored ? I think Tempest wrote a thread about that, but I can not find that one...

If You know any other files, please write it in this post and I will include it in the guide...

Ranzo,

The gamelist I believe is in the .mdb... Dont hold me to that right now I cant verify that, for some reason it just sticks out in my mind.

I would not include either of those files though, first off the gameex.ini points to all your file locations, other people use different drive letter and structure, so it would need to be re-done anyways.

As far as the mame game list, not all people have all the roms, many people have missing / out of date sets. Including that file may only confuse people and make games not work properly as roms get renamed all the time.

There are other considerations such as do not/ filter list.

Many games get filtered based on your criteria, country, bootleg, clone etc... Some games are great and in English even though they are from japan. Pacman is a clone of Puckman from Japan. By default clones are disabled, so if you add Pacman to your do not filter list, it will appear on your game list next time you update.

I think a good project is to find fun games that may get filtered out alot of the time based on the default criteria.

Brian - I think that Ranzo is trying to make a list of important files that people may want to backup in case of a drive crash, etc.

Ranzo - I think the mamelist is in GameEx\Data\Gamelist.txt

You could verify that by copying the list, changing some rom filters, Update List, and then checking to see if the GameList.txt file changes

Other files:

GameEx\Data\Data.mdb - where the favorites are stored.

GameEx\Config\mameemumap.ini - For people that use Mame Mapping

GameEx\Config\CustomMenu.ini - For people that use Custom Menus

There are 3 files in the GameEx\Data folder that start with 'JukeBox'. I don't know if that is what you are looking for, or not.

Thanks Brian and Tempest...I see that I can always count on You !!

Tempest, You are right ! I just need these information in case the hard drive crashed and You want to be able to restore Your system exactly as it was or another case : You changed hardware components and must reinstall the system, but everything else will be the same. This is why I am asking for these files...

To give You an impression of this section, it will look like that :

-----------------------------

4. Important Files for GameEx :

If You have to recover Your system, You surely do not want to again configure the whole system. So it’s very important to know and understand some files where Your configuration is stored, so I definitely recommend to backup the following files :

4.1 “GameEx.ini”

Description : This file contains most of Your GameEx settings

Location : c:\Program Files\GameEx\CONFIG

4.2 “custominput.ini”

Description : Contains all custom defined key mappings in GameEx

Location : c:\Program Files\GameEx\CONFIG

---------------------------

If You know any other files of interest, please write it in this post...

See You,

Ränzo

OOHHH, I see. In that case I would recommend keeping the setup files of: Gameex (of course), Reg key(for Gameex), Dotnet runtimes, Direct X, Runtimes for C+, PSPAd (very good text editor).

Really, I just have a copy of the whole gameex folder.

Format drive, move stored copy of gameex folder to the program files folder. Re-run the gameex setup (for registry entrys and updates) then import reg key. Its fairly simple.

Thanks Brian.

I remember when we had the problem that music titles where 2 times displayed in gamex. The solution was to delete a file and then he rebuild the list when starting gameex again, but I can not remember which file it was...anyone an idea ?
