Hi guys,

im new to this and currently half way into building a cab. i started up gameex last night and saw that while there is a bunch of working games, alot of games arent there!?!? for example some of the newer fighting games, marvel, xmen vs etc etc

they seem to working using mame, mame32xf (or something, sorry im at work, dont have the version with me) and not in mame32 or in gameex that is running mame32.1.09 or something older like that

just wondering which mame program you all run that seams to run most of the games?

thanks

ps: please delete if this is un-acceptable, wasnt sure how/where to ask this kind of thing

Your question is fine.

First off Id like to point out Gameex has nothing to do with how compatable your mame games are. Gameex is simply an interface for launching the games you have.

Make sure you have a complete romset and your romset matches the build of mame you wish to run, build number eg mame 109, 117,133 etc... Other builds of mame like mameui,mame32fx, (insertmame name here) are still based of the officail mame and only include minor diffrences not usually additional rom support.

When you update your mame game list in gameex be sure to check your filters, perhaps you are not showing certian reigons or bootlegs etc..

For the record I use Mame 128 and have thought about upgrading to the latest build only because a new street fighter and mortal kombat has been added that I am interested in.

I can't remember when the switch was made, but I think GameEx doesn't work well with older versions? Maybe .117 and older?

Whatever version you use, make sure it's NOT the MAME32 version. Use the Windows command line version or better known as simply MAME and you can get the latest versions here... http://mamedev.org/release.html

Using the MAME32 version does work, hoever it's been known to cause issues with GameEx as MAME32 is really a front end for MAME.

MAMEUIFX32 0.134u3 works great! with GameEx never had any problems with it. Like Brian said you have to make sure your romsets are current with the latest builds and you have MAME setup to your needs (ex. filters, ect).

But what's the point of running MAME with a frontend on it... if you are running GameEx then it's best to run MAME native, without anything else interacting between the emulator and GameEx.

Yes, the ROM sets are key. Once you update your MAME version, you have to go back and update your ROM set. Hence why I tend to stay with one version for a while.

You need to patch MAME to save all high scores, as they removed that option several versions ago. They wanted it to act like a true old arcade machine that wipes them our when you turn it off.

There are some features of the FX version that MAME doesn't have. I don't recall off the top of my head, but they have been discussed here before. I generally agree that the UI is not needed and can add complexity that is unnecessary, but some builds add stuff that takes that choice out of the users hands (unless they want to add that portion of code to the vanilla build and compile...ugg).

I tell ya, compiling with HK's tool isn't too bad.. it just takes forever. What extras are there, maybe shake the noggin' a little? I'm curios to know. I usually just go for the high score patch, as I don't use cheats or save states.

Oh, don't get me wrong. HK's compiler is super simple to use and there's even a set of instructions that have been prepared to custom compile the FX version. I meant adding all the mods that FX added to the vanilla MAME code. That would be a pain (potentially). I know the source is available, but I don't know what code has been modded to make the UI.

I've stuck with an older version of command-line MAME that still has high scores. what's the point of the cab if I can't brag/intimidate my friends?!?! I have no skillz to compile my own version, so I'm probably still at 109 or whenever they stopped hiscore support.

I agree, no reason to run MAME32 underneath GameEX....remove one layer of GUI and let the awesome GameEX do its job!
