Just found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Prein...ion_Environment and it sounds like a very nice OS for cabinets. It's XP or Vista without the GUI if I understand correctly. And also free (correct me if I'm wrong).

Now, would it be possible to run GameEx from this?

Edit: Sorry, apparantly not: "Note: Some applications, such as games, will not run on Windows PEâ??but thatâ??s not what Windows PE is designed for. Windows PE also does not currently support the Microsoft .NET Framework."

I believe its mostly for creating boot CD's, and having operating systems run from a cd. You can make it boot into VMWARE etc and have a CD/DVD boot into a virtual operating system. There are other free versions such as BartPE, but I think you do stilll need a license for the OS itself. The best option still is to use nlite or vlite and create a slim version of windows.

It's only really used for a boot CD.

We use it as part of MS WIndows Zero Touch setup, which in basic terms boots into WinPE then load the SOE image onto said computer via PXE boot...

There are hacks / mods based on this, check out the 911 cd forums, I've made a customized boot cd for this.

Running GameEX from it, could be possible but would totally suck, think of WinPE like a Linux LiveCD at best, performance lacking..
