i tried out cube quest yesterday, the first laserdisc game that is being emulated by mame (with a 11 gb chd ... )

now i got two problems, maybe you guys know whats going on:

1. the game is quite sluggish. I though a 2x2,4 ghz computer with a radeon 9600 would be fast enough... it's playable but sound emulation is a bit off! does it work for you?

2. Cube Quest is not showing up in Gameex. Now i read that clrmamepro still marks the rom as bad. is this a database problem or do i just need to update my games list after i put the chd there ? (verify roms is turned on)

Just because it's emulated doesn't mean that it's 100% accurate or full speed. I haven't read what the MAMEdevs remarks are on this rom ATM, but it's probably not really there yet. Remember, California Speed (among other Seattle based games) has been emulated in MAME for quite a while now and it's only just recently that top of the line systems are able to play it near full speed. It may take another generation or two for PC hardware to get fast enough to emulate it fast enough. That or the code will require optimization (which is unlikely since that's not really the goal of the MAME project).

i read somewhere that it plays "flawlessly" or at least has very good emulated drivers so i was wondering if its my setup or hardware...

I tried it the other day and it seemed to run very smooth and sounded fine also. I am running a Dell Dual Core 2.2 Ghz Vista system. My system is running with an Arcade Monitor and Arcade video card 800x600. Cube Quest shows up in Mame as good and also shows up in GameEx.

Not sure what to suggest. Have you tried changing/tweaking any of the setting for the rom in your MAME emulator?

no, not yet! i'm using mame plus, i'm gonna try out mame tonight and see how that goes..

does the game show up in gameex for you?

Posted

yes i do use 0127! maybe i should update the list again, since i didn't do that after putting the chd in place. still, the game was running even without the chd so i expect the problem to be something else!

anyway... another short thing: i don't have a trakball and want to use my joystick to play this game. atm the cube spacecraft is always steering to the upper part of the screen... can somebody point out what to change in the mame controls section?

I didn't even have the chd yet and it was in my list of games in GameEx when I updated to MAME 0.127. Might have to do with your filters perhaps.

the game showed up after an update but still the sound is kind of bad (stuttering)! other then that the game plays fine.... but how can i use my joystick as a mouse replacement?

Posted

Stuttering - If you have "triple buffer" as an option in your commandline, or in your mame.ini, try not using it.

Trackball - Press Tab while in Mame, and in the player 1 controls, you will see an entry for Trackball (X,Y) Inc / Dec. set those to use your joystick. (X is left / right, Y is up / down)

I played a few minutes of the game a few weeks ago in MameUI 64 using the multi threaded rendering option and it seem to run perfectly fine for me. This however was on my desktop running a Core 2 Duo overclocked to 3ghz I'm not sure if I would get the same results on my cabinet.

I just realized what the problem may be. If you are using -tripplebuffer, then that's probably it (as already mentioned), but if not, then it might be that successful gameplay requires a 64-bit compile of MAME and a 64-bit OS. MAME is going more 64-bit optimized as time goes on, so it wouldn't surprise me if you gained a significant amount of performance from moving to a 64-bit platform. This is just a hunch though...

thanks for your replies!

i disabled triplebuffer a while ago so i think the issue could be using a 32bit compile. anyways, i got no time reinstalling os/ setting up gameex again <_< so no cube quest for me!
