[RESOLVED] Uh-Oh, Reality Boy (Virtual Boy) problem...

Recommended Posts

Just when i thought everything was configured, I discovered my reality boy isn't coming up. It runs if I play it directly, using the rboy_front.exe in the install folder, which works like a basic frontend for it, but if I try to launch a game from GameEx, it says the standard windows "reality boy has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. Here's my .ini for reality boy..

Anybody else have any experience with this emulator? I wonder if it is just a command-line error, or is the path set wrong? The games list fine, the emulator just crashes when I try to run it through GameEx. Thanks in advance for taking a look.

I thought we'd never hear from you again!

I don't use that emulator, I use Red Dragon, so I can't help much...

Nothing jumps out in your .ini, Did you try Run Last Game? If you put a pause at the end of the batch file, it might point out the error.

The only other thing I wanted to mention, is that sometimes, using a database messes things up, so if all else fails, try not using a DB.

Posted

I figured this might not be the most widely used emulator here in the forum. Hopefully somebody here has some experience with it. Meanwhile, I'll try the database suggestion. Thanks.

I use Reality Boy with success. I don't see anything wrong with your config other than trying what Tempest said about the database. Try running from commandline and see what results you get. Running from rboy_front doesn't really help us as GameEx runs these emu's from commandline. So always test there first.

I tried it with the database deselected and it still doesn't run. I'm really not that good when it comes to running things from the command line. What would you type in your command line to get Reality Boy running a specific title? Every time I try, it tells me "Windows cannot find...".

Thanks.

I'm not trying to tell you which emulator you should use, I'm only offering this as a solution...

According to This Page, Red Dragon is the emulator of choice for virtual boy. If you wanted to try it, I could certainly help you get it going....

I do have that emulator working, already. Maybe you can offer me some help with that, though. The reason I am trying to get Reality Boy running is because I can't seem to get red dragon to run full screen, no matter what I try. I run my desktop at 1280x1024 (native resolution for my monitor), and whenever I run red dragon, it runs in the upper left-hand screen, and the rest of the screen is black. Now, I've tried messing with the different resolution settings in the settings menu of the emulator, but either it becomes so big it runs off the screen, or it is very small in the corner, or the best I can come up with is getting it to fill about 75% of the screen, but it's still in the corner, not centered in the middle of the screen, so it's rather annoying, and doesn't look that great. In reality boy, it runs beautifully full screen. If there is a way to get red dragon to run full screen, I'd love to know, because I've tried and tried, and given up. Thanks for the advice.

I also had the same problem with the screen not being centered. I could never get it the way I wanted to stayed with Virtual Boy. Try running from commandline.

1. Click Start

2. Select Run

3. Type cmd

4. From the commandline type cd K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy

5. Then you should be in that directory according to you config. Then type reality_boy.exe "[RomPath]\[RomFile]" where the rom would be one of your roms. I would simply type out the exe and drag a rom over after it.

6. Then post your results from there.

Or you can run from GameEx and exit out and....

1. Click Start

2. All Programs

3. GameEx

4. Then find Run Last Game and right click and select Edit and post those results. Either will give us what we need to figure out what's going on.

I am trying to type the command line as you said, but I don't know what's up. Here is what I'm typing in the command line:

cd K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy

so before I hit <enter>, the command line reads:

C:\Documents and Settings\User>cd K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy

Then, I hit <enter>, and nothing happens, except a new line appears that just reads:

C:\Documents and Settings\User>

So what am I doing wrong?

I can't do the run last game option because I have a ton of small apps and stuff installed, and the screen is full and runs off the screen when I highlight all programs, so I can't get to the GameEx entry there.

Are you sure your emulator and your roms are on your K: drive? After you hit enter you should be in K:\3d Arcade\emulators\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy. How are your roms? Are they zipped? You mentioned you got working from rboy_front so has to be something that you're doin that's causing it to not work.

Since you can't see that cuz you have too many apps then go to C:\Program Files\GameEx\DATA\runitgame.bat and right click and select edit and copy and past it's contents. Given you've got GameEx installed on your C: drive.

All the roms and emulators are in the K: drive. The roms are unzipped. I know it doesn't make sense that it isn't letting me in through the command line. I ran GameEx and ran a game through Reality Boy, and it crashed and brought me back to GameEx again, and I grabbed the info from runitgame.bat. Here it is:

K:

CD "K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy"

reality_boy.exe "K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\roms\Galactic Pinball (JU) [!].ram"

I hope this can shed some light on this problem, and thanks for offering me this help.

My guess would be that Reality Boy doesn't like the extension ram. All my Virtual Boy roms have the extension vb. For giggles, rename to Galactic Pinball (JU) [!].vb and try running again.

Posted

I would say you're correct about the ram part, as I tried running it through the rboy_front, and it didn't like it, either. But I also have the roms in .vb also, and I tried selecting the .vb rom through GameEx, and it crashed as usual. Here is the info:

K:

CD "K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy"

reality_boy.exe "K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\roms\Galactic Pinball (JU) [!].vb"

Then I tried running that rom directly through rboy_front, and it came right up and played. So it's got to be something to do with the command line, hasn't it? But if that's the same command line you're using, then I can't imagine what's wrong.

Posted

Yup all that looks good. The only thing that bothers me and maybe GameEx as well is that it can't access that location when you try from commandline. If you type in the wrong path you would get an error saying The system cannot find the path specified. You've got to be getting something when you try from commandline when you use cd K:\3d Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy

Posted

Playing around a bit with the command line, it seems that I can move about in the main C:\ directory fine, but I can't get to any other drives or partitions with the command line, no matter which one I try to access. How does that make any sense? And how come all my other emulators are running fine through GameEx? All my emulaltors and roms are on my K: drive, and the command lines are running those fine.

Posted

Okay, so now I've got the command line in the proper directory:

K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy>

I tried typing reality_boy.exe , then dragged a rom over directly, so it read:

K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy>reality_boy.exe"K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\roms\Galactic Pinball (JU) [!].vb"

Then I hit enter, and it said:

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Missing a space after reality_boy.exe

Posted

Ooops. Okay, put in the space:

K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy>reality_boy.exe "K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\roms\Galactic Pinball (JU) [!].vb"

now it says:

'reality' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

"K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\Reality Boy\reality_boy.exe" "K:\3D Arcade\emulators\Nintendo Virtual Boy\roms\Galactic Pinball (JU) [!].vb"

Just cut and paste that.

Ooooh---that brought up the reality boy in a small window, and the game's warning screen appeared in black and white. But I can't enlarge the window. Progress!

Posted

Now you need to config with the switches based off the settings you want. You need to read the readme file in the doc directory or try this commandline in GameEx.

reality_boy.exe "[ROMPath]\[RomFile]" -display 800 -sclscr 2 -pallet red

Copy and paste that into your command in GameEx. That still doesn't explain why It's not working in GameEx. I say your typin something wrong in there. Like this last time you said reality is not a valid command, it's cuz you forgot the underscore after it.

Posted

That did it all right! Came up full screen, red, and ready to play! Just out of curiosity, I copied and pasted just the first section of the command as you posted it above:

reality_boy.exe "[ROMPath]\[RomFile]"

just like it was originally in the config, and sure enough, it crashed again. As soon as I put back in the rest of the command:

reality_boy.exe "[ROMPath]\[RomFile]" -display 800 -sclscr 2 -pallet red

It ran fine. It looks like it just doesn't want to run for me unless it has these additional parameters in the command line. Thanks a million. You've have been an enormous help to me. Very, very appreciated.
