Hi Guys,

I have my Mame setup running well along with GameEx, using an X-arcade for MAME games and old school modified NES controller with USB out to play some 8-bit Nintendo games.

Now I want to get a wheel hooked up to play one of my favorite old driving games, A.P.B.

I know there is alot of discussion on this board and other boards about the best steering wheels and how to set them up. I am hoping you guys can guide me a bit.

Here is what I have to work with:

a Logitech Driving Force Pro wheel/pedals (with a USB interface)

or

a Microsoft Xbox 360 wireless steering wheel/pedals (wireless but you can buy an adapter to make it work with the PC)

So, I have a few questions:

1) Which is better for Mame, namely for A.P.B

2) What am I going to have to do to get the wheel to work properly with the game

3) Will the pedals offer some level of sensivity for gas and brake, or will they be purely "On" and "Off"

Any help you can lend is appreciated!

Thanks,

Jason

Neither... APB used a 360° steering wheel to control the game. Neither of the wheels you listed are 360° (actually, noone makes them), so you will be just as well off playing with the keyboard.

Ok, so that's a little harsh. The point I'm trying to make is that you aren't going to get the controls to work right and will likely be disappointed. If I were you, I would see if there's either a hacked version available that uses 270° steering wheels or a PC/console version that you could run. If so, then either of the wheels you listed will work fine.

Or how about a REAL arcade steering wheel?

Only $265, of course it doesn't come with pedals, or an encoder... Probably not an option!

I found my driving cab on Craigslist. The monitor didn't work, so I gutted it, and bought a used P4 1.7Ghz, and 20"monitor (also Craigslist)... total cost $145.

Those kinda work, but they aren't going to give the feel of the original. On the other hand, if it's fun...WHO CARES!!! Btw, do those fit over the spinner or do they have to be installed all the time? Just curious.

I used a Championship Sprint cabinet for my racing cab. A buddy of mine picked up a working one and gave me the non-working one as thanks for use of my truck. I stripped the Paper Boy boardset and the monitor out and replaced it with an Athlon XP and 20" Trinitron tube. Total cost...don't remember and probably don't want to know ;)

I have one and you have to remove the spinner knob. It is only one simple screw and you don't need to open the panel. The wheel then slides onto the spinner shaft and does not use a screw. It works very nicely, but using a button on the panel for gas isn't the best. I would like to add a gas pedal, but I haven't found an easy way to do it yet.

I take it that would work for all driving games then, not just A.P.B or do 360 degrees controlers not operate non-360 degrees games.

That wheel works for all driving games, 360 and traditional. It mounts in a single standard button hole, and is also a very nice with spinner.

I keep getting side-tracked when I go to try it out, but when you configure the 270° games to use the 360° wheel, I assume you need to map the 360° wheel +/- axis to the "paddle analog inc" and "paddle analog dec" respectively? I tried to get these set up, but couldn't figure it out a while back. As I recall, I tried to map the 360° wheel's axis to the "paddle analog" control which didn't work properly.

All I did was go into Mame, and set the analog paddle to mouse X(axis), by selecting the paddle input option, and then spinning my wheel. I did not use the inc/dec on either the dial, or paddle controls. Maybe that will help you....

I don't know if the guy still has it, or if it came with a cab but he's talking about throwing it in the garbage...

I watch Klov, and Craigslist in my area, It's not that unusual to find things like this. You have to be fast on Klov, or most of the time stuff will be gone. I don't know if anyone here has heard of it or not, but I use http://www.craigshelper.com/ to search for stuff.
