I haven't run my registered version of GameEx for several months and have just recently done so, there-by auto updating to the latest version. For some reason over the past few months my PC drive letters had changed. I then went thru my GameEx Config and change all my drive letters accordingly. Now for some reason GameEx will start-up ok but I can only navigate three times in to the menu and GameEx freezes and stops responding in Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit. I'm not certain what to do or why it is doing this, oh yes, GameEx worked fine before I corrected the drive letters in the GameEx config, only it obviously wasn't displaying any Mame. One other thing I did is cut & paste my Mame CHD's over to my ROM folder, approx 64 Gb worth acquired from *****. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Attached is my GameEx Log.txt, if any further info is required just let me know and I'll do my best.

Thanks everyone! :P

Have you done a list update? I think there might be some cached data that points to the old drive that might be causing an issue. So give that a try.

I wasn't able to get that far, as I stated, three choices into the menu and it freezes. How ever, I just disabled the use of Daphne and all appeared to be working ok, I just updated the Mame game list and it finished ok, but as soon as it finished and displayed a list of games it froze again. Attached is an updated Log.txt file with a few minor changes in the GameEx Config.

Update --> Nope, even after successfully updating the Mame Game List and having GameEx freeze upon completion, I stopped GameEx and closed it, I just restarted GameEx and I'm back to the same issue, three choices in to the menu and GameEx freezes and stops responding in Windows.

I dont know what the issue is, but it could possibly be a firewall issue. Id run GameEx in windowed mode and make sure nothing is blocking it.

What is the third menu choice that actually makes it freeze, try to narrow it down if you can.

Hi Tom, I have tried Windowed & Full screen & have had better results in Windowed mode. It really doesn't matter which three choices I make, whether I navigate up or down in the menu of the home screen, three is all get before the program freezes and stops responding. As for firewalls, I'm using the Windows firewall in Windows Vista Ultimate X64. I don't think it's a firewall issue as I'm always able to auto update GameEx. I'll check for any Video driver updates but I haven't had any difficulty with any other programs freezing like this, I've uninstalled GameEx and performed a registry clean. I'll try reinstalling GameEx with new Config and see what happens.

Although it sounds like you've already deleted your old setup, my suggestion would have been to backup what you have and start from scratch. You can always import your old config into a new one, but if it's gone at this point, that would be tougher...

Not sure if this is the same issue I've been having lately. Since a few versions ago GameEx has stopped working for me in the same manner MadMan describes. I've narrowed it down to GameEx freezing when it goes to play the video snaps.

My codecs are fine as I can play all of the video snaps in media player (classic), VLC or what have you.

Have tried different themes and it makes no difference.

BTW. and maybe off topic, How can I identify the new v4 themes in the theme selection list? I have some that have v1 after them but no V4s.

Yeah... me too.

I have made sure I've unistalled all divx codecs and then installed FDDshow... the videos play fine in WMP but cause GameEx to freeze when playing them...

I forgot to add too that the sound still plays for the duration of the video... but just a black box where the video should be and to get my computer up and running again... I have to reset.

Any thoughts?

Beau

So it looks like a few of us have been encountering this issue with the videos that cause the system to freeze up. In another forum I notice that Tom reckons nothing has changed in the way videos are handled in GameEx, but it seems strange that many are having the same issue on systems that were previously working since a few updates ago.

Tom, If there's anything I can do to shed some more light just let me know.

BTW I found that having GameEx running in a window and not hiding the desktop makes it easier to shut it down without restarting the system.

So I figured it out... actually I found it in another post from way back...

I DL the newest version of FFDshow thinking newer is better... but apparently the best version to use for GameEx is one from 2005.

You can get it HERE.

I then uninstalled the old codecs, restarted, then installed the 2005 version of FFDshow and I was good to go!

Hope this works for you as it was SUPER frustrating (as I'm sure you know!)

Thanks a lot for that tip. It has been driving me a bit nuts  I'll try it out tomorrow. I'm using the FFDSHOW tryouts version which I updated hoping to solve the issue so will revert to the old one and see what happens. Fingers crossed.

Cheers

Mark.

AWESOME!! That solved it. Latest is not always the greatest huh? Not sure exactly when I updated FFDSHOW, in fact I don't recall that I did until AFTER I had the lockup grief in an attempt to resolve it. Oh well, for future reference the original FFDSHOW is the version that works.
