Just a few days ago I upgraded to 9.42 and the latest version of Mame (0.126). After doing a mame list update, all the icons for the games are next to the wrong games, and some don't have icons at all (ones that should).

I've made sure the icons are all in the right directory and have proper names. They were correct before the update.

I've tried doing another update of the mame list, I've tried deleting the windows icon cache, but no matter what those icons stay. I even just gave up and deleted the icons directory, just so it wouldn't annoy me, but somehow the icons still showed up.

So are they cached somewhere I don't know about? Any ideas on how to fix this?

What version of MAME did you have before? What version of Icons did you have? Did you upgrade your icons to match the new version of MAME?

I had 0.125, and the icons were 0.125. When I upgraded the icons were still 0.125, and I thought that caused the problem, but since I have upgraded to the latest version of the icons and still the same problem.

Even if the icons were old it shouldn't have caused this though. If they changed a few rom names around, then a few icons might not work, but they didn't change all the rom names. ALL the icons are messed up.

One more thing... I checked the icons during the screensaver mode where it puts the icon on the bottom in the fancy bezel information. The icons are wrong there too.

Try searching for sf2.ico (for example) on your hard drive. If it's cached, you should see more than one location pop up. I doubt it's cached cause that would be quite a bit of data.

My guess would be more that the data.mdb file got corrupted somehow. That's the file that GameEx creates when you update the list. I don't think it starts from scratch every time, so it's possible that once the icons got screwed up, they are still in there and not getting fixed. You might try moving c:\Program Files\GameEx\DATA\data.mdb to data.mdb.bak and updating your list again. I would consider this a long shot though.

I checked for other icons, but thats a no. Then I tried moving the data.mdb file, but Gameex won't boot without that file, so I can't update the list then. :(

Yeah, if you delete/move the data.mdb file, GameEx has a cow. You probably would be best off moving it, then installing GameEx over top. This will only replace that database with a new copy of it theoretically.

Ok I tried it this morning and it didn't work.

After looking at it some more I realized that the icons are correct, but they are the regular icons, not the mameui icons. The folder I am pointing to in the options has the mameui icons in it for sure. I also checked to make sure, and I don't have those regular icons anywhere on any harddrive. Tom, does gameex pull icons from the internet or cache them somewhere or something?

The icons are from your folders AFAIK. Those icons would be pretty big for Tom to include in the installer, so I'm sure he doesn't install them for you.

It seems that the most common cause of this sort of thing, is that some people have more than one installation of mame on their computer, and are pointing at the wrong one...Triple check your path.

The icons are cached to an image file, can't remember the name but check the GameEx\DATA folder.

Yeah I found this last night (haven't had time to post it yet). Its under the MEDIA folder. If you delete these .bmp's it will fix the problem.

Tom, Gameex doesn't seem to ever update these unless you delete them manually. Testing it out last night, if you point the icon path to any valid location, it uses whatever is cached. If you point it to some invalid folder, or leave that option blank, then it doesn't use icons at all. But it never updates no matter where you point it or if you update your icons.

Doing a list update should update the icons.

"Should" is a good choice of words

I tried an update many times, but it never fixed that. Oh well, it works now... but just a heads up that something caused it to stop updating, so there may be a bug we can track down.
