I've read around about people getting it to work and others not. I just would like to know, for those who have it working smoothly, what are the specs of your computer? Since it seems that Killer Instinct is kind of the holy grail around here. That way I can get an insight about what to buy.

Also any other important information like your Mame32 version or whatever else might be of importance.

Thanks for any information.

Im not sure about holy grail. But it works fine on my dualcore 2ghz laptop with 2 gigs memory.

Also you may opt to use build .96 of mame to emulate it full speed on not so up to date hardware.

My mame machine is an xp2500, 512mb and an 9700pro. Runs KI fine.

I`d imagine that Gauntlet Legends is more the holy grail. That thing is a beast to run.

Well for me the Holy Grail is Street Fighter II. Its been emulated a while but I just cant consider my collection complete without it.

Street fighter IV is going to be released in the arcades.. However it will probably be 15 years before it can be emulated.

Now Im just rambling...

Ok, so if there is another game that is more demanding than Killer Instinct and you can run it then put down your specs and tells us the more demanding games that you can play. That would also be very helpful.

Try to keep posts other than computer specs to a minimum. Just to keep it clean, ya know. Thanks thus far everyone.

If you have a 64bit processor and 64 bit XP and a 64bit compiled version of MAME.. You can get REALLY great speeds on

Gaunlet legends, carnevil,Nfl Blitz's and other Seattle Based games.

Look at DJinfinity's posts.. He talks abut 5 minute mame compiles with his overclocked rig.

In my cabinet I'm running an X2 3800+ with 3gb of ram both KI run at full speed for me. I would also suggest going with XP 64/Vista 64 if your using a 64bit processor it would only make sence :)

you can also use the Super Nintendo Version of KI since this one is running on a P3 800 MHZ ;)

(...I do know that this version has been cut down in animations and videos, maybe the N64 Version is okay for you? Runns on a Celeron 1.2 Ghz)

Besides a decent machine, for me to run KI & KI2 smoothly I had to buy a $30 audigy soundblaster instead of onboard and it fixed the game completely. No lag at all

Hi,

I have a 3GHz Core2Duo, 4GB RAM, Vista 64 Home Premium, running 64bit MAME 0.124. KI runs no problem, Gauntlet Legends runs the intro OK, but gameplay is still suffers choppy gameplay and runs a little slow (20-25 frames a second maybe?). Close, but no cigar yet.

Regards,

Dwight.

Do you think that motherboards matter at all? That is, with everything else being equal.

What about memory? Not just the amount but the speed.

Do you think onboard video would be sufficient? Otherwise, which video card do you have or suggest?

And anyone else with sound issues being solved with a separate sound card?

I know this might seem like a little too much info for a Mame setup, but I think it's useful.

Thanks everyone so far.

If you are strictly referring to MAME with your questions, you should be fine with an onboard graphics card. MAME doesn't use any 3D or even 2D acceleration, so any modern computer's onboard card should suffice. As for memory, I seriously doubt that you would see any difference in speed of MAME if you bought the low spec vs the high spec memory. I would think you should be fine with 2GB of value ram (good brand's have value lines like Kingston). Keep in mind that if you choose to get 4GB+ of memory, you will need a 64-bit OS to address it all.

As for the sound card, you can use the onboard card just fine. You may notice some performance increase if you opt for an addon card, but it depends on what CPU and how much memory you get. For reference, all of my computers have onboard sound and have for the last ~10 years. The quality they produce is perfectly adequate in a modern system, so unless you have special needs or some burning desire, you should be fine.

And YES, the motherboard matters! It's more a matter of brand than what's on it though. If you get a POS board (PC Chips, ECS, etc), you may be fine. However, I have had bad experiences with these boards and given a choice, I would opt for a good brand for about the same price.

the spec i was thinking for a dedicated box i'm building...

core2duo 2160 or 4500 (don't know if the extra cache is worth it?)

2 or 4gb ram (does it need the 4gb?)

64bit vista

video card with component output (something like a low to mid geforce or ati)

what does everyone think of that?

Sounds nice. Although if your going to go all out on the cpu and memory why cheap out on the video card? You can get a geforce 9600 pretty cheap.

Id also get the cache... It IS worth it...

If you are going to buy a video card anyway, definitely look at getting a decent one (like Brian said)! Don't spend $500+, but at least look at something in the ~$100. If you get much less than that, you might as well go onboard (although remember that onboard video shares/steals system memory). I am running a couple AMD X2 systems with GeForce 6150 and 7xxx onboard cards. They work fine for typical stuff and MAME seems to work fine on them too. Whatever you do, just make sure you are buying a card that's at least better than the onboard solutions!

well by low to mid i was thinking 8600/9600 or something similar

either that or i'll upgrade my main pc and use my current 2900xt in it... lol

That's what I've done with my cabs. I upgraded my main machine and used the old parts in the cab. Since most emulators don't require that much power, a 2 year old pc works fine!

And don't forget not to cheap out on the monitor. Consider an actual 27" arcade monitor and an Ultimarc ArcadeVGA card. This single upgrade to my cabinet has been one of the most enjoyable. The picture is phenomenal and accurate to the arcade versions. I've run TV's, LCD's and CRT's and nothing compares to the real deal.

Maybe, but if you haven't seen one, then you don't know what your missing. So, you could save a LOT of money going with a TV or CRT monitor off Craigslist and still be very happy. ;)

It's all in the eye of the beholder says I. I have a 27in Monivision high res monitor in my Mamecab and I love it. I am not a "Purist" I would prefer a pretty colorful picture. I actually prefer LCD's, but like I said it's all in the eye of the beholder. Example when I got my NFL Blitz 99 machine from the auction it had a standard monitor in it. I can't wait till later this month so I can put a medium res monitor in it. I have been spoiled by my Mamecab and deskmame by way of picture so anything less is like ugh to me. Now my new arcade machine I just got today has a 33in medium res monitor and I love it! Also people if you want any kind of speed in "Seattle" games buy Intel and not AMD as they are front side bus challenged. My Mame systems are now both Intel Core Duo 6850's with watercooling and O'Cd to like 3.8GHz atm. I got the Quad Cores regulated to just a basic computer and a 5 disc replicator.

Very true, I had a TV for quite awhile and thought it was great. :) I was really on the fence justifying the expense when I built a new cab. After having one though I would never go back even if it meant going cheaper on some other components. What is the one thing on your cab that you'll be looking at EVERY day. You know how many hours you're going to be staring at that screen? Might as well make it a good one.

Isn't that Monivision like an $800 monitor? You can get a nice 27" arcade monitor for around $400 shipped. Have to disagree on the look of LCD's and computer monitors vs. a genuine arcade monitor, I just don't like the look as well but it truly is subjective.

I got lucky and got it for $400.00. Where can you get a tri-sync arcade monitor for $400.00 with shipping included? I'd like one for my Blitz 99. The cheapest I found was from Happs. I'm afraid that doesn't include shipping
