I built a MAME machine which includes a 27" TV as the monitor. It worked quite well at first but now it has issues with vertical hold. I have tried replacing the video card, cables, and computer. I have tried changing the refresh rates and resolution settings. I have verified that the TV is ok by plugging normal cable tv into it and I have even tried using a converter to bring the signal in through the coax port on the tv.

I would appreciate any help as I have a lot of time and money invested in this and really enjoyed it while it was working.

How about just getting a new 27" TV. I've always been able to find them locally on Craigslist for around $40. Probably less than what your replacement video card cost.

The TV is not the problem as far as I can tell. I tied in cable and it works fine, I have replaced the video card and it still has the same condition. (rolling horizontal hold). I have changed the cables and tried numerous hertz settings without any luck either...

Rolling displays means the wrong refresh rate and/or resolution usually (assuming no hardware is actually broken). I did have a CRT back in the day that started having problems with horizontal hold and had to be sent back to the manufacturer to get fixed. If your TV is working with other inputs, I would rule this out, though.

How do you know the TV isn't the problem? You say you've replaced the video card, cable, computer and tried different refresh rates so that leaves the TV as the only component you haven't swapped. Just because it works with cable TV doesn't mean there may not be an oddity with that particular brand or model that causes it to behave erratically when hooked up to a video card.

Maybe, but I would look at the resolution the card is actually outputting before I purchased a new TV. If the card is outputting the wrong resolution, it may wrap the data all funny. For instance, if I set my XBox to 1080i (a resolution my TV doesn't support), it will look AFU! That isn't a problem with the card or the TV, just a bad setting. I agree that the TV could be the problem, but I wouldn't spend a bunch of money buying a new one and having to deal with disposal of the "junk" one until the resolution is checked out first. There might be nothing wrong with the set...

I have a couple ATI card that roll the display during boot up... My nvidia cards do not have this problem though... What card are you using?

My Nvidia card did the same, i now have an ATI card but both displayed the same problem. I wouldn't even care about it rolling at startup, unfortunately it continues to roll after it warms up.... I really appreciate everyones help, I built this thing, it looks great and it played great at first, now I can't use it... Quite the bummer.....

Wait a minute... Is it rolling fast, or just slowly? I was thinking you meant it was moving fast and illegible. Is it just scrolling slowly across with everything viewable as it goes or is it flashing by with possibly messed up images?
