game stops playing

Sometimes while playing a game, it just quits and goes back to the GameEx FE. So far it has happened during Galaga and Centipede. What is going on? Is there a log of some sort to look at. Is there some setting I should be using?

The log is here.

C:\Program Files\GameEx\LOG

The file name is log.txt.. Any way can you be more specific. Is this only with MAME games? Have you looked at your mame config(in mame) and see if you have UI CANCEL assigned to random key sequence. Is there anything in the backround. If an emu is crashing there may be a good chane there is a log for it aswell. Gameex usually will only come back into focus once the process of the emu isnt running.There might be something else going on.

What programs are running in the backround? if any.

I have two guesses, but they are only that. For an actual answer, you need to do what Brian said and check the log file and/or run the game that quit unexpectedly through the "Run Last Game" batch file.

1) Game is crashing due to some MAME related problem (bad/corrupt rom, wrong version, corrupt build of MAME, etc.)

2) You are playing a game from the screen saver and after a time, it quits back to GameEx after seeing a certain key pressed. I've had this happen for some reason, so I know it happens.

I have this same problem playing....what game was it now?...oh yeah, Tempest.

I could play for hours in Mame, but using GX, it would quit in 20 - 30 minutes.

I don't have a solution, just another vote for yep, it happens.

I will help test if it needs to be done.

Do either of you have sticky keys enabled or somthing? It has to be something.

Tempest does not crash when I play it.

There is a setting in advanced configuration that tells GameEx to exit games automatically after an amount of time. It think its under tweaks. It coud have inadvertedly got turned on.

Yup, the time limit would have been my next guess

I did have the exit game after 10 minutes enabled.

For some reason, I thought that option took effect after an idle period. If someone left a game running, after 10 min of no input, the game would end and go back to GameEx. I tought the screensaver mode only happened from the GameEx FE so I needed to end a game so the screensaver would work. I will see if this solves my problem.

On my setup, it's pretty random. Pac-Man has a setting of about 90 seconds, Tempest is about 60 seconds, Tron is about 3 minutes....

In that case you need to turn on the "Im a little crap at games" or the "Getting a little bored with old skool" settings.

Didn't see those but will search again. I do have on the "Damn good thing this isn't costing real quarters" setting.
