Other Emulators - Screenshot & Title??

Hey Tom....

I LOVE GameEx, and will most certainly be using it for MAME, but I was hoping for a little more in the way of other emulators.

It appears the ONLY option for other emulators is a selection screen with just a game screenshot (snap) to be displayed. In other words, it doesn't go into a second menu (like MAME) to see the cabinet, marquee, title screen, flyer, control panel, history text, etc.

What I really like to see on other emulators (SNES, Genesis, etc.) is a game screenshot (snap) and the title screenshot.

If it's going to stay as a selection menu only, is there any way to make it so that you can see BOTH the title screenshot and game screenshot (snap) BOTH on the selection menu?

What would be REALLY AWESOME is if you could make it so it goes to a second menu (like it does with MAME) so that people can view a title screenshot, box art, cartridge art, etc. and maybe even the control panel layout for each emulator (would be the same for each game per emulator, just show it where it maps the console systems joystick buttons to the control panel)? (You can get the box art and cartridge art from http://www.screenshotarchive.com/ ) This way, you could even develop your own "history" file to be shown on the second page.

Actually, it would be nice to have the OPTION to see a title screenshot and game screenshot (snap) in the MAME selection menu also - configurable, of course - one or the other or BOTH.

Thanks for listening!!!

Tom, any thoughts on this?

Hi, sorry, I've been a little busy in the real world ;)

I must admit its the first time I checked out Screenshot archive, and it looks very cool. I did not realise the filenames are already in Goodtools format, which makes this quite doable, and a good excuse to add the favorites feature for other emulators too.

Your comments and request are deffinitly noted.

Thanks for your support.

SWEET!! Thanks for listening Tom!! This would be really cool. I would have NO need for any other front end program if this were implemented.

Do you think there'd be any way to add the Year and Manufacturer information other than by hand (so you could sort on them)?

This sounds great Tom.

Would it also be possible to have a 'overall favourites' with all emus combined (incl. mame)?

I've been making one already by using the method you suggested in the 'launching pc games' thread. An 'overall favorites' would save have a heap of time creating so many .bat files for my 'all time classics' section ;)

Using the batch files was an awesome suggestion too by the way - opens up heaps more options. cheers :)

also with the screenshots - I've been using cover pics for my console games, and I've noticed some covers that are square (like cds, gameboy advance) get stretched horizonatlly, but not vertically, so it distorts the pic - seems to be when the original pic is smaller than what is displayed in GameEx - is there a setting to get around this? or if not, would it be possible to do this in the future?

There will be a seperate favorites sections for emulators and MAME I am afraid, its too complicated to combine them.

I am glad the batch settings were useful, I'll think I'll add that to the FAQ.

I am aware of the snap resizing.

Thanks,

Tom

too Complicated ? arn't the favorites stored in some form of database ?

I mean , all that needs to be done is add another field, called "Emulator"

Excuse me , i am just thinking with my MS Access knowledge , perhaps its more difficult in the Language you are programming in .

Let me refphrase that then, too much work, and it would have implications on performance.

No, that's not what needs to be done, and it has nothing to do with language, more the way it's written.

It would also be impossible to code GameEx in Access. It also does not use any formal database but something I have custom developed, this would make the application far too slow otherwise.
