I'm just messing about creating a map file to tidy up my psx list in GameEx. I feel stupid asking this but, how do I get the | character? Which buttons on the keyboard produce this?

Thanks, and Merry Xmas.

On a US keyboard you press shift and the slash key above enter.

Well typically on US keyboards its right around the Enter key...on MS made keyboards its the last key to the right just above Enter...you'll see the backslash on the bottom & the pipe symbol above it...hence holding shift while pressing the backslash will product the pipe.

Some how I managed to forget how to manually insert it by its unicode value...so can't show you how to do it that way....but its real slow...so not advised.

Probably should have said I'm in the UK/UK Keyboard. After much keypressing I've found it in the bottom left of my keyboard on the backslash key with shift pressed. Thanks.

Heh yeah region would have helped everyone get you better directions...I have still to figure out why USA & UK keyboards are different...seems to me they should be the same...only diff I'm aware of is a few spellings of words, color vs colour...hehe hope that example was right. ;)

Anyways good deal.

Not real interesting I know but main difference is positioningg of that key and the @ key. Also UK keyboard has a pound key as in currency.

In the rest of europe if I rmemeber the keyboard is more like the US one. Accept its not easy to get the @ key without some ALT shifting etc..

You can tell Im fairly well travelled :)

Yeah I must have 800 or so titles in various formats (bin/cue, iso, ccd) It looks a mess in GameEx as is, hence the need for a map file to tidy it up. I'm hitting the sack shortly (two kids to manage tomorrow on a hectic xmas day!) any tips greatfully received Nologic.

I think gameex creates the map files for you. Just find the right one and edit it how you want. Just make sure you save it somewhere else so gx doesnt recreate the original.

Well GX does & doesn't...there are two basic types.

GX Auto Generated

<File Name> "<Pretty Name>"

[32X] After Burner (U) ~ After Burner Complete (J).zip "[32X] After Burner"

User Created

<File Name>|<Pretty Name>

[32X] After Burner (U) ~ After Burner Complete (J).zip|After Burner

The main difference is that GX generated ones...will typically always get tampered with by GX to keep in sync with the games found by it. Where User created is sort of etched in stone...these will not be altered except by the end user.

Now as you've stated if a GX generated one is moved out of the DATA folder and linked to, GX will fail to tamper with it. The method you outline is simple and effective...tho I tend to differ my approach when it comes to CD\DVD's as there can be a lot of files in play...and things can get ugly fast.

Give me a while and I'll have my tutorial put together that explains the method to my madness. :)

Okay for now I'm just going to have to send you to a prior thread...till I get everything sorted out as a catch all for all CD image media.

Prior thread

I've attached a few screenshots to help show what I'm doing...basically each game is in its own folder...I rename the folders to how I want them presented as, then rename the contents to match the folder name, then alter any CUE files to reflect the name changes in files.

This should work fine as long as there is never a number of the same type of files in any given folder....like where one has CUE+ISO+MP3\WAV since I'm unaware of any PSX dumping method that produces such files...the thread linked to above should be safe for your dumps as well.

Fire off any questions you may have & I'll lend you a hand.

Ok after much head scratching whilst reading through the prior thread I think I've got it.

So, I need all games in their own folders in one directory, make sure the folders are named as I'd like them. Use rename file to directory, then use the fix cue files program. Finally use CD Dir to map program to generate a map file.

I tried this quickly on two games and it worked perfectly. The files were ccd/img/sub type, so my only concern is, how accurate is the fix cue files program for the bin/cue image types?

All in all, this is going to save me hours and hours of messing around if the cue files thing isnt a problem.

Thanks a lot Nologic. :)

Yeah that thread wasn't much for explaining things as more just me brain storming and ranting. ;)

The script I'm hoping to write will do a lot of things for the end user convert MP3\APE\FLAC to WAV, rename to directory, fix CUE files, generate a basic MAP file all in one shot...so hopefully the end user only gets stuck fixing directory names prior to running the script...then fixing up the pretty names in the generated MAP file...so do some work prior to bed...then do some in the morning\afternoon. :)

Its not plug and play...but it should be a lot easier over all for the end user.

I'm still a noob at this stuff but I'm getting better and I think over all we can make this a reasonable hobby for others to take up and enjoy. :)

As for the CUE program over all it should be fine...but it doesn't hurt to make a backup of all your CUE files prior to running the program...matter fact I hope things are backed up prior to running any of my stuff.

While there certainly isn't any intent to screw others over...things can go wrong (shouldn't) to its always best to be prepared for the worst.

Hehe all I got to say is I didn't make anyone do anything...I only advised...hehe they did what ever to them selves. ;)

I'm generally good about giving out source code and my executables can be decompiled...so the end user has the option to check things out first to see if things should work right for them or not.

Anyways your welcome and I hope things go well and that it saves you a lot of time and effort. :)
