I have been thinking about a "Mame" cab for many years, and have finally decided to start building one. I visited my local arcade/vending dealer, and was shown over 100 non-working cabs for sale. The majority of them were 25" (or smaller) CRT CGA monitors. Most of the cabinets had working monitors, but were missing the games and control panels. I plan on either building a panel, or buying a slikstik and mounting it on the cab. Although I would prefer a 27" multi sync monitor, can anyone tell me what kind of results they have gotten with a CGA monitor using a JPAC and ArcadeVGA card? Thanks!

Its what I did. I just bought an old JAMMA cab, and stuck an X-Arcade on it. If you just want to play the classic arcade games and play them like they originaly where its good, and you dont mind a few issues that these old monitors have such as a little burn in or stretching on one side. If your a perfectionist, arnt into the classics, or want to play modern stuff then dont bother.

Just a heads up....

Do NOT go anywhere near Slikstik.....

A whole cartload of crap is about to hit the fan.....

Just build one to fit in...that way you can chose what Joysticks you prefer....

Ultimarcs 360's are programmable so you can program on the fly to a 4 way, 8 way, 2 way etc....

I have not tried them, I cannot afford them but I have heard good stuff about them...

I have an Ex Sega virtua fighter 3 cab....I'm using an I-Pac (It's a non Jamma cab) and an ArcadVga and the results are great once you have tweaked the settings etc....

But as Tom says if you're picky and/or want to play modern PC games on your cab then don't bother

Want to elaborate on the part about SlikStik?

It seems they have been taking peoples orders and money and not delivering the goods....

If people can get hold of Christian he fobs them off with an excuse.....

Now no one can get hold of anyone..

Some people have been waiting months for their goods....

There are several lawsuits that have been filed and a huge one is in the process.....Mamerooms was going to buy SlikStik till the shit hit the fan...

It has also been found out that they have been operating without a business licence.....

That's the short of it.....

For the long..

Give below a read.....

You can read details here:

Short summary: They haven't been shipping products in a timely manner (even for them), have been blaming other vendors (Happ Controls, Ultimarc, etc) and are continuing with their history of poor communication.

They may be bought out which would be good for anyone in limbo waiting on a product that they paid for that has not been delivered yet.

Edit: Orclord beat me to it...

Oh, well that is old news. I thought there was something new that had come down the pipe. There have been complaints about the timeliness of orders forever, but it's purportedly worse now. I thought there may have been a huge class action or something. However, I didn't realize that they didn't have a business license (doesn't surprise me though).

I just spoke with Ann Marie, and she has been absolutely slammed with e-mails. This is probably why she has not had a chance to reply to everyone. PLEASE keep them coming. She is compiling all of the information, and she will contact the Attorney General's Office on behalf of everyone. She has been attempting to contact Slikstik, and they have even been ignoring her. As things move forward, I'll see if she can create a mailing list to keep everyone informed of the progress of the suit, and I'm sure the Attorney General's Office will do the same with the contact list that Ann Marie provides to them.

Based on our discussion this morning, she feels that this is likely going to become a significant criminal case!

Thanks for all your replies!

I ended up buying a very lightly unused Alien vs Predator cab (minus the control panel), and the monitor looks almost new.

I must admit that I have had my heart set on a slikstik for many years, but thank God you guys made me aware of the current situation before I invested the 500 bucks on the classic panel.

Can anyone suggest another good place that makes a nice control panel?

Thanks!

If you have access to a table saw and a drill press (or a circular saw and a hand drill if you're cheap/broke), you can make your own for much less. It's REALLY not as hard as people make it out to be. I was a bit scared to try, but mine turned out beautiful! Of course, if you live in a downtown apt, that might make it more difficult with noise restrictions and the mess inside your place. The thing is, if you screw everything up when cutting, your only out ~$20 and some time. As long as you get it close and you plan on painting it anyway, you can cover all mistakes up with putty and primer!

If you have your heart set on paying someone else for labor, I would check arcade controls. They have lists of vendors for panels and I think there are even reviews if I remember. If not, there are tons of people on the forum if you need comments. I've only ever seen the XArcade dual stick in person. It feels pretty well made. If I were buying one, I would go for the tank stick since it's got the trackball built in.

Yea the X-Arcade Duel stick is well made, the only bummer is when using it with the PS2 connection you must have the keyboard plugged into it......

Although I suppose that would not be a problem if you had the space.....

I did not know this till after I bought mine in a sale......

It has resided in the loft for the past 2 years, I've never used it....

Still I'm sure it will be used on a hair brained idea in the future....

Have you considered buying just the box and installing the joysticks buttons etc. yourself? Mameroom offers some cp models that you can assemble yourself. You can also custom design one to fit whatever components you get:

http://www.mameroom.com

I built my my first control panel to fit a Xevious cab I purchased. It wasn't terribly difficult but if you don't have the right tools like a router and slot cutter for the t-molding, jigsaw or spade bit for the holes it'd be a major pain. I used mamerooms plans to build my 2nd, 3rd and 4th cabs from scratch. Haven't tried their products directly (other than the plans) but they have a good reputation.

Other things to consider having on your control panel are: volume control, headphone jack, master power, audio power and marquee power buttons, usb port.
