I've got Gameex up and running under Vista x64 and am using it with the new Mame64 build. Everything so far is great, except for one thing. I can't get the Mame32 folders to work. I have the folders setup in the same way as the tutorial says on this board and nothing.

Some quick things...

1. Yes I have done a rebuild of the list. I've done one each time I try something new.

2. Yes I have the option "Custom List Path" pointing to the folder where the .ini files are.

3. I have a new mameinfo.dat and history.dat that are both working and populating into the game list.

Is there an option I'm missing that says to use these custom folders?

Also, the manufacture, genre, and year tabs on the left don't work with the full Mame list. Is this because I'm using a "non-standard" build?

The first thing I notice is that GameEx is detecting you are running "Operating System Platform: Win32NT". I suspect this is just because GameEx doesn't take advantage of the 64bit stuff, so it doesn't worry about it. This shouldn't affect MAME though.

If the program isn't written in 64bit then windows makes it look like its a 32bit system... but you're right, this shouldn't affect Mame. But this also doesn't explain why it just seems to be ignoring the folders with the .ini files in it completely :(

Genre and version won't show up because GameEx can't find CatVer.ini. It also can't locate nplayer.ini, so you won't have info about the number of players for your games. Here's a section of my log file where I ran update. You can see that it's detecting catver and such just fine.

I wonder if it will process the custom folders if the prerequisites are missing? Also, did you try updating your list? I don't see that in this log, so I can't be sure.

Posted

I got rid of those files because it wasn't working (kinda dumb reason :) )

The thing I notice though is possibly because I don't have it saying it updated year, manufacture, and category... maybe then it just doesn't do the custom folders.

Where are your folders located and how are you pointing to them in the options? Just want to make sure i'm not doing something stupid. Mines is at d:\Mame\folders and thats where I have the options pointing to.

Posted

That should work. You just need to put your MAME32 formatted lists in the d:\Mame\folders directory, too. Then, verify that GameEx is pointing to that directory and you should be good to go! Just for kicks, have you tried a standard 32 bit version of MAME (either vanilla MAME or MAME32)? I don't think that's the problem, but it wouldn't hurt to eliminate your build as the problem.

Posted

Ok I just tried the 32bit version and same thing. I have verified that I have all the right stuff in all the right places... but the log file still says its adding the nplayers stuff, the mameinfo stuff, and so on... then just stops where its supposed to be doing the genre stuff and never gets to the custom folders stuff.

I'm starting to think its something with Windows 64bit but I'm not sure. I would like to stick with it because according to Aaron Giles the 64bit version is supposed to be quite a bit faster. I might just use a different front end :( But if I go back to 32bit I'll test out Gameex again and let everyone know if its just me (probably) or windows (also very possible ;) )

I tried it with Windows XP and got the same problem... so its gotta be something I'm doing. I have all the folders in the right places but every time I do an update it just doesn't do the custom folder part. I check the log file and it just stops and goes back to attract mode after it gets done updating the year information.

By the way... the manufacture, genre, and year information still don't work. Any other ideas?

Some other things I have tried to eliminate possibilities:

1. Tried it on d: and c:

2. Tried mame on d: and c:

3. Made sure I had an icon file in the icon folder that corresponded to what the favorite.ini file has

with each test I made sure to do an update and check the log file
